The English for "me da vergüenza"

Postby MarianoM » Tue Sep 11, 2018 11:35 am

In spanish we have an expression that says: "me da verguenza" when you are too shy to do something.

I'm not refering to the words "embarrassed" (which means to feel a fool) or ashamed (which means to regret or repent) but in this case I only want to say that I'm too shy to do something. How would you express it? For example:

1) Me da vergüenza hablar en publico

2) Me da vergüenza hablar con ella.

Thanks

Hi, Mariano

1) I feel shy speaking in public / I feel shy when I speak in public
2) I feel shy talking to her / I feel shy when I talk to her

Now we wait until someone comes up with a better answer :P

You could use timid.

I am timid in public.
I am too timid to speak to her.

But I don't know Spanish so I don't know if it conveys the same meaning.

I agree with Jaleel10's answer. I'd just add that in some contexts, namely if you're so shy about talking to the girl that you never do so, sentence 2 could also be "I feel too shy to talk to her".

I'd probably say "I'm too scared to talk to her" or "I'm scared of speaking in public."

Thanks guys, apparently there isn't a literal translation to the word"verguenza" in the meaning I want to convey. But the word "shy" will do. I'll use that.

Thank you all!

English simply uses more adjectives to describe how you feel - I'm hungry, thirsty, shy, reluctant, hesitant, whatever. Spanish is more likely to use nouns.

Also, I changed the title to make it clearer what you're asking about. Feel free to change it further.
