Perfect continuous tenses in French ('I have been....'), confusion!

"I was speaking French today" is still passé composé. Imparfait has different uses.

I read the thread twice and have yet to find "Cavesa's mistake".

Maybe she she meant the tense of the phrase in English? Where "was speaking" is a two verb construct?

Yeah but we call that English tense "past continuous." English tenses are pretty much all compound tenses as there are only two basic forms - the present and the preterite. The participle and gerund are derivations that need to be used with an auxiliary verb. But I think Cavesa knows you can't superimpose French grammatical terms on English.

imperfect = passé composé

imperfect = perfect
