German equivalents of English informal phrasal verbs

Postby Axon » Sat Mar 17, 2018 2:06 pm

In English, I can use "to bump up" or "to crank up" as informal ways to say "increase."

Crank up the volume on your speakers.
I bumped up my weekly reading to 150 pages.

Is there a good way to express this in casual German?

Thank you!

Most verbs that come to mind that are less formal than "erhöhen" or "steigern" in turn are a lot more specific. For instance, "cranking up the volume" could be expressed with "aufdrehen" ("Dreh' mal die Mucke mehr auf"), but it only really works when there's something to move with your hands – buttons, knobs, be it real or digital.
For a more general term, I think "hochschrauben" might come close to what the English verbs get at: "Ich hab' mein tägliches Lesepensum hochgeschraubt" sounds just fine to me. I'm not positive it works in all cases though.

"Crank up the volume on your speakers."
nicely colloquial:
"Gib den Lautsprechern mehr Saft."
