OK, I did the word frequency test that I mentioned earlier where I simply went through the list of most common French words. I had a dump of the first 20k most frequent words from the corpus which emk found. I got really really really bored after marking about 4000 words, and even more bored with the next 4000 at which point I quit. However, what it showed is that I know 99% all of the first 2k words and 68% of the next 2k. It then becomes very sporadic and the majority of the words which I know after 4,5k are typically cognates of English words. These cognates are 34% for me. Cognates might have given out on me above that but I was losing the will to live so I stopped marking them.
My estimate for this test is much lower than the dictionary test and I figure I know 4713 words of the first 20k French ±10%. So I think my vocabulary for the language as a whole is probably only about 12k ±10%.
