El nuevo frances sin esfuerzo

Postby westminstress » Wed Sep 27, 2017 2:30 pm

Hi there. I am a high intermediate Spanish learner, and I just started studying French as a total beginner. Right now I am using a combination of Duolingo and some U-Tube videos, but I would like to try Assimil. Ideally I would do Assimil from a Spanish base so that I could review Spanish and learn French at the same time. Unfortunately the Spanish-base edition of French with Ease is out of print and enormously expensive.

I found a PDF of the Spanish book here: https://www.scribd.com/doc/11842132/Ass ... n-Esfuerzo

If I buy the current edition of French with Ease for English speakers, will the audio match? This is the version I would likely buy:
https://www.alibris.com/Assimil-French- ... ?matches=3

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I do not have an answer to your question concerning the audio recordings for Assimil El Nuevo francés sin esfuero. However, I had a quick look at the websites Assimil.com, Amazon.fr, Amazon.es and Amazon.com, and it seems to me that the least expensive option would be to purchase the latest edition of "El Francés" (book + audio) either directly from Assimil or from some other source.

Assimil El Francés - Assimil.com
http://fr.assimil.com/methodes?base_language=2&learn_language=0&level=

Assimil El francés - Amazon.fr
https://www.amazon.fr/Superpack-Franc%C3%A9s-Livre-4CD-audio/dp/8496481662/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1506525032&sr=8-3&keywords=Assimil+El+franc%C3%A9s

Assimil El francés - Amazon.es
https://www.amazon.es/Franc%C3%A9s-Audio-Audio-formato-sforzo/dp/2700580729/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1506524494&sr=8-3&keywords=assimil+el+franc%C3%A9s

Assimil El francés - Amazon.com
https://www.amazon.com/Assimil-Superpack-Franc%C3%A9s-Livre-French/dp/8496481662/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1506525276&sr=8-3&keywords=Assimil+El+franc%C3%A9s

Otherwise, you could simply purchase Assimil French from an English base and forego the temptation of practicing your Spanish while learning French, particularly as there is no shortage of resources for practicing the former.

Hope this helps!

Buy this one. It's the most current one. It's very good as I have this version.

I reviewed the lesson titles of my copy of Assimil New French With Ease (Anthony Bulger, 1998) and they are identical to those of the edition of Assimil El Nuevo francés sin esfuerzo that you located on Scribid. PM?

Thanks everyone. I think I have been able to confirm that the new English audio does NOT match the text available on Scribd, but I can get a Spanish base version of Assimil from Amazon.fr for around $80 US including shipping (this seems to be the best/most convenient deal available).

Next question: Do you think this is a good idea? (using L2 to learn L3) The advantages I can see are that since I have limited study time available for both languages, it is theoretically doing double duty to use a Spanish base. But (1) maybe the Spanish translations are not all that helpful to my Spanish study; and (2) maybe I would miss out on some explanations/get confused bc even though I understand written Spanish pretty well, my native English is obviously stronger.

I'm interested in your thoughts either way - does it matter? which is better?

Although I cannot locate the thread, it seems to me that there was a discussion not too long ago of the virtues and difficulties of using one’s L2 to learn an L3. It may be that the discussion took place within, or was as part of a digression from, an unrelated topic.

While I did not participate in the discussion, I recall a consensus being formed around the idea that significant difficulties attend such an approach. Furthermore, it seems to me that many participants recommended that this not be attempted prior to having achieved a level C1 in one’s L2 language. Nevertheless, depending on the resources available for the new L3 language, one might not have much choice but to forge ahead (nota bena: this does not apply to a native-English-speaker who wishes to learn French).

While your intermediate-level Spanish would be of great assistance in learning French, there is a high probability that you would experience interference between the two languages. This could even include a level of confusion and uncertainty in Spanish that you have not previously experienced. The "good idea" evaluation may depend on how much frustration you can endure during the learning process. Frankly, I would not recommend it.

Thanks, food for thought! I call myself "intermediate" because I'm probably a solid B1 in terms of speaking ability. I would estimate that my listening comprehension is around B2 and reading is C1 (I can read almost anything at this point).

I am going to try to find that other thread!

I think using an L2 to learn an L3 is sometimes called 'laddering', you might try that as a search term.

EDIT
I got curious myself! :-) I think the thread you want is "Which language to use as base, when learning a new language".
