How much language study do you do?

Postby Carmody » Fri Jan 13, 2017 2:43 pm

Rick Dearman in one of his posts said that learning a language is hard work. I find that a very helpful observation given the fact that I never heard anyone ever say it and to the contrary many people are saying how easy it is to learn a language in "3 months."

I agree with Rick and am interested to know how much study time people put in to study their language(s).

On average, I study my French 2-3 hours every day.

I just looked at my stats from the 6WC and I averaged 1.3 hours per day, so I have voted "one hour" in the poll, though it may be less than that when I'm not making a special effort for a challenge.

I would like to spend more time if I could, but that isn't realistic with the other commitments I have in my life right now. If anyone tells me I could learn a language in three months if I made proper use of my hidden moments, I may hit them

It is definitely hard work for me, especially when I'm just starting out with a language. I'd go so far as to say that I don't enjoy learning languages at all... but I do enjoy it when I've learned them to a good enough standard to use them, which ultimately makes the initial pain worthwhile :)

I can do 2-6 hours per day, but I don't continue it "hard work" or serious "study" after 1-2 months and I'm into interesting native material.

I chose 4 hours, but that time is a mixture of focused study time along with reading and watching French. It may actually be less than 4 hours, but It's probably averaged that for the past few months. I will definitely need to keep that pace for my 2017 goals.

About five hours is my daily average, but that's counting entertainment (watching, extensive reading, podcasts) in stronger languages (though not counting German).

I average about two hours a day with my three current languages (excluding film) but because of my schedule I do the bulk of it on the weekends and less during the work week. I am jealous of those who can do 4-5 hours a days. I don't even have that many hours available very often.

Lately I'm averaging 30-40 minutes a day, but I am also in a medical laboratory science program, so...

I also don't count TV, music or radio in my target language--should I?

Mostly none, but I live in England now and read English online for example here. I must practise my Dutch and German or I will forget them.

2 hrs for Anki reviews (English, Swedish, Spanish)
1 hr for Spanish and Swedish reading
2 hrs for creating cards in Anki
0,5 hr for Spanish listening
0,5 hr for English listening
0,5 for the Swedish Glossika course
2 hrs for the L-R method (Swedish-Polish)

This is my schedule for 6 days in week, on Sundays I only review the Anki cards.

I`ve been doing this for 3 months and I must admit that sometimes I feel quite exhaused. I guess I need some break for girls. :)
