As of July 23rd 2021 homeschooling in France is now illegal.

I'm at the point now where I'm almost ready to say, I'd never live in France due to changes in recent years. It's not compatible with a life of freedom despite the beautiful countryside, villages and principal language.

I'm ready to shift my target country/location.... maybe even language. I love the French country and people. A few are spoiling this for the majority.

That's horrible. Sorry to hear this. I know HSLDA will routinely ask us (HSing parents, former HSers, etc) to donate to help parents who are homeschooling in countries where it became or is illegal. I know some German parents were imprisoned for educating their kids at home.

I am not sure how reliable this information is, but here is a survey from wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeschooling_international_status_and_statistics

Of course, at the very least it would need to be updated with the information about France.

Depending on how updated the Wiki page is, I'm actually surprised that home-schooling is allowed in as many countries as it is. In Guatemala it is illegal, but it's considered a right in Belgium? So interesting if it is true.

I know California is making, or has made, home-schooling illegal. This is the only state I have heard this development.

Double check your sources.

Homeschooling is legal in California, and there is no legislation on the horizon that threatens it.

From the article you provided a link to IronMike (German family persecuted in 2012 for disregarding the law on homeschooling):
LifeSiteNews.com wrote:
Dirk has good reason to fear that he may eventually lose his children. Homeschooling is illegal in Germany under a law dating back to the Hitler era, and in recent years the country has become increasingly Draconian in enforcing the law – removing children from their families, levying heavy fines, and even sentencing homeschooling parents to jail.

It's interesting that the law dates back to the era of a dictator given there have been some comparisons made with the one responsible for making this latest decision in France: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/28/emmanuel-macron-takes-legal-action-over-hitler-poster-comparison

Conversely, it's surprising to me that it is not allowed in so many countries. I wish more countries/jurisdictions would take a leaf out of Belgium's book and make it a constitutional right, everwhere. I will never cease being surprised at how populations look to their leaders for societal rules. We ought to be granted such rights by our creators. Government didn't create me, that's certain. How can (of course I know and understand how) a family have their children taken off of them in one country and potentially be sent to prison (see referenced article above from IronMike) and be welcomed with open arms in another. Sweden has been known to be very harsh on illegal homeschooling as well.

At least the USA has demonstrated some sound attitutes (again taken from IronMike's referenced article):

LifeSiteNews.com wrote:In one recent case, a family successfully petitioned the United States for political asylum. In his decision granting asylum, U.S. Judge Lawrence Burman said that Germany’s policy of persecuting homeschoolers is “repellent to everything we believe as Americans.

Homeschooling is alive and well in California. I also very much doubt a state ban on homeschooling would survive constitutional scrutiny. (It wouldn’t even get to the Supreme Court.) The US gives a lot of deference to parental rights.

Our 2 year old speaks mostly English with me and fully English with mom, but understands everything in both languages. I'm planning on introducing French to the 2 of them and future kids down the line, although we want to make sure they have a firm footing in Spanish first.[/quote]

Hi Funny

Six years down the line. What's the level of the languages of your kids?
