Italian: faccia di bronzon

Postby allf100 » Mon May 29, 2023 10:31 am

sfacciato sfrontato
faccia di bronzon

Ciao,

Could someone explain why faccia di bronzon refers to a person who is shameless, please?

I know it literally means a face of bronze.

If a person is thin-skinned, s/he is with high self-esteem. If a person's face is of bronze which is very hard, it could refer to someone is shameless. Does this assumption make sense?

Thank you!

English has the same kind of expression: a shameless person is “brazen,” which is an archaic word meaning “made of brass” (brass like bronze is an alloy based on copper).

Regarding the English word
https://www.etymonline.com/word/brazen
The figurative sense of "hardened in effrontery" is from 1570s (in brazen-faced), perhaps suggesting a face unable to show shame.
