Trying to Write a letter in French

Postby Max Bosh » Wed Mar 01, 2023 9:50 am

I'm trying to write a letter in French but am acutely aware of the potential for grammatical errors which undermine meanings in the letter. Hence, I am putting the main text of the letter here in the hopes that a fluent speaker can maybe help me to perfect the letter so that it's meaning comes across properly.

This is my translation so far:

This is the text from which I am trying to translate:

Thank you so much for remembering me and our conversation. I would really like to visit the province and your invitation was very kind as it would make me feel less like a tourist to stay with you and it would give me the opportunity to improve my French.

I'm sorry I didn't write sooner. Since my visit to Vienna, I started university and didn't have time to think about vacations until now.
I also wanted to respond in French despite my inability and I only just found the time to do so.

So, I'm going to visit Vienna next month. Any chance that I can come to the Province while I'm on the European continent?

--------

There are several errors in the French translation which I know about and have not left out because I don't yet know how to fix them. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Just an FYI. There is an open-source grammar checker which works for many languages. You can try to run it through that first when you write, but you should still get a native to double-check important stuff.

Thanks for the tip,

I've run it through the tool. Here is the improved but imperfect translation:

I am not really a "native2 speaker. I guess my translation might do, though

Should be "merci de" + infinitive, but probably more colloquial than se souvenir / se rappeler would be "Merci d'avoir pensé à moi..."

L'Académie Française considers "opportunité" in the sense of "a set of favorable circumstances for accomplishing something" to be an anglicism, preferring "occasion" instead, but I'll let you judge how much stock to put in that:

https://www.academie-francaise.fr/opportunite

Instead of repeating "visiter" in the last paragraph I would write something like "Je serai à Vienne le mois prochain."

Not a native speaker either, just a few suggestions.

I feel like I'd have gone the other way in thanking someone for remembering or rather having not forgotten...

-------------------

Each will have his own way of expressing himself, but I altered a few errors and offered some other ways of approaching the translation. I think simple works better. It's probably best if a French native here looks at it.

edit: added a missing 'je'.

What is "the province" ? It's the french provence ? (sorry for the stupid question)

Probably a misspelled Provence, yes, given it was capitalized.

It's not a stupid question. I wondered about it myself, if it was that because the P was capitalised.

Nice response by Arnaud. "Commencer l'université" didn't sound quite right to me but I wasn't sure how to write it better.
