Persian project: translation and memorization of the song Darkam Kon by Yas

Postby Khayyam » Wed Nov 02, 2022 12:43 am

All right, so here again is the Persian song I'm learning. (Sorry to post about it multiple times, but I think it's best to start a new thread where actually doing the project is the focus.)

A transcription I found online:

درکم کن

by Yas

Intro:

[Hook]

[Hook]

[Verse 3]

[Hook]

And here's an obviously terrible (but still mostly understandable) line-by-line translation done with Google Translate:

Hello, hello
Go right ahead
Sorry for bothering you because of your ad, I wanted to get hired if possible
Did you bring your documents?
Yes please
Are they complete? Complete, all documents are complete
Work experience?
I have no work experience
It is not possible, sir, you must have a work experience
So what should I do? Everywhere I go now, they tell me that you must have work experience.
I don't know, you have to start somewhere
finally did
I'm sorry, you must have a work experience

Well, finally, you can see that I am now unemployed. I don't know what to do

not my problem Say it, you are on your way
God take care of you
I'm sorry, move on
Do me a favor
Please
Heh, ok

Verse 1

Ah, Baba, Baght Abad, understand me
Don't go ahead and move sir
You sat here to answer me
Don't look down, see my angry eyes
If you were in need, you would become one too
Look at the bad luck name on my forehead
I am angry about a 10 Richter earthquake
Why does he go to you with a closed collar and a beard?
This can make our youth old

You guessed that one day she will get a card
As long as it reaches me, the wretched displaced person
You say not now, it's lunch time later
Come and do something good in your day
I don't want to put your signature in the museum
Don't say your documents are incomplete, come tomorrow
Complete everything and then come back
Pay attention to the rules for hiring
You must have 5 years of work experience
I don't want to shout and make a fuss
Tell me where to start for 5 years

[Hook]

You can see that I am fed up with this
I cut from everywhere, I am old
I pack my bag and leave at night
Because of you, I'm done, I'm leaving

[Verse 2]

You woke up and the morning air hits your head
Read the events page in the newspaper
Look at the mother who killed her daughter
You say what a cruel mother, what time?
what ? Did it break on the first day of work?

If you are careful, you will find roots with a little
You understand that even my mother becomes a rebel
I wish that mother would live again
She was telling the story of her life
The day God gave his daughter as a gift
Mother was crying with happiness
Despite the fact that the father was still unemployed
Sitting at the hospital smoking a cigarette
Debts are increasing every day
Death draws a line around ads
Her hope for the future was torn and lost

My ass, who made the street work
You are a murderer, may God forgive your sins
Now go read Gol Agatu magazine

[Hook]

[Verse 3]

what ? You think now that you are behind the table
Are you higher than us? You mean you are not hungry?
S/he talks as if you have;
Now, you are going to write back
It's been a long time since a young man appeared in front of you
An educated young man who is a traveler
S/he has worked hard all these years for something
That s/he will propose tomorrow with a white face
You already know this saying of the intellect
You have to sit at the wedding table with money
And I lost something called loyalty in money

Gone are the days when they used to say that understanding is important
Poverty destroys everything
Then love escapes through the window
Baghtabad, understand me
Do not stand in front of the road, sir, move

[Hook]

Here's a YouTube video with an English translation in the subtitles. Better than Google Translate, but clearly not done by a native English speaker. Best English translation I could find.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6_8vH0Z1jw

I'm going to take this in small bites and gradually memorize the song as I spend most of my Persian time on easier projects such as reading children's books. When I'm done, I hope to have written (with your help) a full English translation of the song that's fully intelligible and at least tinged with artistic merit.

So, for the first small bite, I just have one question about the first line of the intro. What exactly does سلام عرض شد mean? Google just translates it to "hello," which can't be the complete picture because سلام by itself is hello. عرض by itself can mean width, latitude, breadth, presentation, ordinate--what? Of course I know شد means became-grew-happened-etc., but I don't know how to make sense of the whole phrase.

Thanks!

A puzziling expression I don't quite get it myself, I take it to literally mean "Greetings were stated", I think it's just a polite fixed phrase for greetings.

Yes, it is a formal greeting. It just means ‘Hello’.

You can also just say سلام عرض شد, without the possessive suffix.

There are actually plenty of alternative formulas: با عرض سلام ...با عرض سلام و احترام ...با عرض ادب و سلام و احترام ...سلام و عرض ادب.

You will also hear سلامْ خدمتِ..., where خدمتِ means ‘to’, like in سلام خدمتِ همکاران گرامی, with an adjective like گرامی ...محترم or ارجمند after the title of the addressee in order to show reverence and respect.

عرض کردن is a higher register equivalent of گفتن.

عرض کردند که آقا! طلبه ای دزدی کرده
They said: "Sir! A seminary student has committed a robbery."
