Large vocabulary method

Postby miles » Sat Jul 23, 2022 6:09 am

Hi,

I am looking for favorite vocabulary building methods. Thinking of using a large Anki deck if any one has recommendations/ links.

I would like to find one large set and stick with it for a while.

Thanks!

You may find these frequency lists useful: http://frequencylists.blogspot.com/2018/02/welcome.html

Personally I prefer to compile my own lists. At the moment I use a Kindle which has built in dictionaries and every so often I transfer the new vocabulary (which also includes the context) to creat Anki flashcards.

^ Phew, I don't have to write in readable Spanish! :)

From the post it looks like you've already decided on Anki decks. I don't think one single thing works. I've found - though this is for me - that Anki decks work best when they relate to content you're actively using. So the book you're reading, the type of things you're watching. Running shorter lists. Of the longer lists this is probably best as verbs

The fastest way, in my experience, to add mass vocabulary in SRS is to test "written form" => "Image." (You don't need real images on your cards, just use your imagination.) But this is only effective to learn names of things and concrete objects.

I don't like learning a lot of vocabulary that I haven't encountered elsewhere; it's painful, and doesn't stick well for me. However, there are two well-known polyglots that do something similar: Iversen and Stuart Jay Raj. I'd recommend you read about how they implement it. You can get free Anki decks here.

L2 to L1 is very ineffective for me because it does not tax recall enough. Unless all you are going to do is read, L1 to L2 is much better, but both directions is the best. Also, there is nothing wrong with translation (unless you are the owner of Rosetta Stone), so images are not an absolute necessity by any means.

Vocabulary can also be studied theme-related. This is what they offer here in Germany, mostly with audio. My Langenscheidt has 1GB of audio.

I used this frequency word scrape to create some Anki decks out of books and webpages.
https://www.browserling.com/tools/word- ... 71b1349981
This way, I can get the vocab for a whole book. My friend works on a Bangla newspaper, and he plugged in their entire archives so now I have a deck for newspaper-bangla. My main way of acquiring vocab is in context, but I take 10 min a day or less for this.
