Hi, I posted a topic recently in general discussion regarding fluency and the idea of learning by theme came up as a method. I luv the idea. I think it could be very productive to hone in on a scenario to get comfortable with language.
I am looking for resources to help me learn spanish in context of cooking in home kitchen. Something like Pimsleur would be great. Like Pimsleur for cooking Mexican food…
I am currently on Pimsleur level 4, MT end of basic and FSI end of programatic and I just had my3rd italki session. I have also just started various podcasts to improve listening skills.
Thanks!

Re: Learning by theme
PinkySlippers mentioned a spanish [ or Catalan?] language cooking programme called Cuines, there's a YouTube channel called Cuines TV3 which I assume the same one.miles wrote:I am looking for resources to help me learn spanish in context of cooking in home kitchen. EDIT
As Tractor points out below this a Catalan, rather than a Spanish cookery programme!

Re: Learning by theme
Read cookbooks in Spanish. Maybe look for one on basics of cooking so you can learn all of the terminology. You could also try to find a cooking related grammar/textbook type of book like I have found in Italian where it discusses things related to cooking.
As far as themes in general I read multiple non-fiction books on subjects that I'm interested in as it helps to naturally acquire vocabulary and terminology in context.

Cuines is in Catalan, not Spanish.

Re: Learning by theme
A frustrating element of self-learning languages for beginners is finding specialized resources available for their own particular learning desires. A big, popular language like Spanish has plenty of resources available. Searching in the target language itself can be more effective than searching in English to bring up more resources.
I did a google search for vocabulario de la cocina. Also an image search may be helpful.

Re: Learning by theme
I used to like listening to a French cooking themed radio programme where listeners phoned in, "on cuisine ensemble". You could add whatever the Spanish is for "phone in" to your web seach too!iguanamon wrote: Searching in the target language itself can be more effective than searching in English to bring up more resources.

Re: Learning by theme
After you build up some kitchen vocabulary as suggested by iguanamon, I would start looking at some youtube videos where they talk through the process of a recipe.
"De Mi Rancho a Tu Cocina" is a great one if you are specifically looking for Mexican cooking. "La Capital" with Oscar Meza is another good one.
Watching Mexican cooking videos on Youtube was actually one of the first things I did when I started learning Spanish.
You will quickly learn the names of different foods, spices, measurements and useful cooking related verbs; the difference between tomates and jitomates, and that they use the word for tooth to mean clove (i.e. "diente de ajo").
