What do you use to E-Read?

Postby luke » Fri Oct 29, 2021 3:55 pm

People use Electronic Readers, Paper books, etc, and don't limit themselves to only one.

Trying to understand how many are mostly using E-Reading devices, mostly using just software on a general purpose computer, or mainly read traditional books.

The poll allows one choice, which is meant to be your "main" method.

On the choices:

I use a Kindle device (hardware)
I use Kindle software on a non-kindle device (example, Kindle software on iPad).
I use another eReader device (not a computer) - things like the Barnes and Noble reader or any other non-Kindle device for reading books.
I read paper books and may use PC, Mac or Linux software for e-reading (don't have a dedicated e-reading device).

Would like to see comments about how people do their e-reading (or book carrying) and what they like or don't like about what they're doing.

The "device" is meant to give information about how portable your solution is. (stick it in your pocket, or purse, or backpack, or needs its own case, or it's chained to wall in your dungeon, or traditional books are are better because they don't need electricity).

I opted for Kindle on a non-kindle device but in reality I read paper books quite a lot. (+ I print academic books if I don't have access to the paper copy.)

Kindle app on an iPad, solely because work gave me (loaned me?) the iPad for free one day and I hadn't even asked for it. I plan to buy a Kindle eventually but why blow $100+ when I have something that does the same thing right now?

I prefer paper generally, but the lookup option is nice. Especially for French right now.

Half and half, paper books and electronic. Either epubs on FBReader on a tablet/phone or the computer, and PDFs on computer.

I also use paper dictionaries, but also the very good pop-up dictionary extension recommended in a thread by (I think) Kraut?

Mainly paper-based reading content, but do have the kindle app on my phone which I have used on the rare occasion to read a book. I read from iBooks app as well and utilise an iPad mini at times but usually for reference content (eg Norwegian dictionary in PDF format for quick lookups while studying). Planning to purchase an e-reader in near future once I figure out which one suits my needs best. I prefer paperbacks but see big advantages in certain contexts for e-readers, thus I must have all bases covered if I'm going to become the world's most famous polyglot, like ever+++ Gimme a few days and I'll win the polyglot event at the next Olympics. Makes total sense, right? Remember that time I was a giant Guinea Fowl? Remember that? Do you? Do you?

I prefer to read at my computer (no e-reading software -- I just convert the book to TXT and use a text processor), because it is the easiest to look up the new words and add them to my deck. I have a kindle, but I can't find any good dictionary for the languages I'm working on, and I have to mark the unknown words to look up later, which I dislike.
