How do the spoken Egyptian Arabic vowels correspond to written tashkeel?

Postby Caterpillar » Wed Oct 20, 2021 8:36 pm

Do the spoken vowels even correspond to written tanwin tashkeel? Can one tanwin tashkeel have multiple vowel pronunciations? Can more than one tanwin tashkeel have the same spoken vowel?

This is the best I can figure out so far. Largely taken from Wikipedia. (Sin س is just used to hold the tanwin tashkeel)
سَ = man, father
سَا = long version of father
سِ = sit or set
سِي = happy, bay
سُ = put or more
سُو = food

Thank you for your help! :D

That's alright, but you're missing the "ei" and "oh" long vowels (IPA /e: o:/), which aren't easily represented in Arabic script. Maybe you can write them as سَي and سَو, but this is also ambiguous with the diphthongs "ay" and "aw" (IPA /ai au/, sounding rather like English "lie" and "loud"). Most materials that teach Egyptian Arabic use the Latin alphabet for a reason...

Thank you for pointing that out. I had the impression that Arabic script was more accurate/"better" than the Latin alphabet... oops

Where is the tanwin in your examples? Tanwin is "nunation", like shukran شكراً

Oops! I meant tashkeel, not tanwin! Thank you for catching my error
