The thought of reading one of those 500 page history tomes at this juncture makes me nauseous  !

Years ago as teen I found Histoire de France en bandes dessinées and there was another one I can never remember the name of which dealt with the crusades. A bit jingoistic perhaps, but I learned quite a lot at the time. Later on I read quite a few of those Que Sais-Je books, which are single-topic things.

The only history I've read since then is Catherine Dufour's L’Histoire de France pour ceux qui n’aiment pas ça, which is hardly an academic slog and that's why I read it.

There was also Le Grand Vizir Iznogoud, but that probably doesn't count.
