I always do L1 to L2. Of course sometimes recognition becomes a problem but it's something that can be easily compensated by extensive input.

I remember having the same problem, and then found that doing one round of recognition during the initial learning phase solved the problem significantly.

I see it's been a while, but I would like to chime in. Some learners find it easier to learn words and phrases in their target language (L2) by translating them into their native language (L1), while others prefer to learn them in context or through immersion. You could also print both sets of flashcards from https://www.worksheetsgo.com/community- ... ash-cards/ to use them without a phone to avoid distraction.
That being said, trying both methods and seeing which one works best for you might be a good idea. You can create a set of cards with L1 --> L2 and another with L2 --> L1, and test yourself on both to see which one you remember more easily.
