I have played with this a lot. These days I'm more or less following the recommendations from the refold site https://refold.la/roadmap/stage-1/a/anki-setup.

I am constantly monitoring my number of new cards versus my enjoyment of anki.

Random thoughts

This is how I set my settings:

https://youtu.be/1XaJjbCSXT0

Many repeats at the beginning and very few for mature cards.

I use Anki like a language calculator, notebook, etc. It is very flexible. The best tool I know.

Depending on what I want to do I might have a different type of cards: basic, bidirectional, or cloze.
I create everything from scratch. Creating a card is a form of studying.

Good to avoid words cards. At times they are useless... Better are sentences... better have media... if possible image....Short and simple sentences...
The days that I am not for study, I pass everyone as known. Cheatings? Nope. I do between 300-400 cards/day for 3 languages.

Avoiding burn out. Key.

Ah... Patience pays. 10 cards/day at a 80 retention rate = 365*10 * .80 = a bunch of known cards.

Good luck. I got to go to do my Anki study!

The default settings had me forgetting new cards after the first day far too often, so I added two more steps (30 and 120 min) for new cards a few years ago. This way I achieve nearly 100 % retention during the first days of review; and I feel it helps me a lot with the overall learning process - especially for cards that are a bit more complex.

Steps: 7 days / 14 days / 20 days

Graduation interval: 21 days

It might be harder to recall a new card after several days, but there is some research that suggest that long steps are better than short steps for long term retention.

what do you have for minium interval? I have it set anywhere between 5-10 days for my decks. I find short intervals like minutes and 1-2 days absolutely useless. I also love big steps/graduating intervals. I only use one step though.

these are the settings I used for korean a couple years back. now it's more lax like bigger graduation interval, minimum interval, bigger step, bigger lapse

1) Options>New Cards>Steps (in minutes) I change this from "1 10" to "10". 10 was the old default, but it got changed to 1 10 for some reason, which was really confusing and annoying to me because that forced me to immediately repeat a rep that I got right, which makes no sense. I have no idea why they changed this.
2) Options>Lapses>Leech threshold I change to 99 and Leech action I change to tag only because I want to control which items I delete.
3) Options>New Cards>New cards per day and Reviews>Maximum Reviews per day I change to 1000 because I don't want these to be limited.
4) For languages that are on hold, and which I am not doing a spurt in, Options>Reviews>Maximum Reviews per day I change to 10 to limit the time I spend on them.
