how can I get subtitles from streamed video?

Postby DaveAgain » Sat Sep 19, 2020 4:33 pm

I would like to be able to download the subtitles included with some German video services.

e.g.
1. https://www.ardmediathek.de/ard/video/t ... yMzk5OTA0/
2. https://www.zdf.de/serien/professor-t/p ... t-104.html

Is it possible to download the subtitles from these videos? If so, please tell me how. :-)

Would I be able to use that to download just the subtitle file from a streaming video?

You can abort the download as soon as the subs has been downloaded, but it seems you need to initiate the video download. They are separate files, if that's the issue.

If you're only after subs, maybe JDownloader2 is a better option. Within the settings, there's an option likely called plugin/extension (tillägg in Swedish). There you can modify what you want to find on each site. Both ARD and ZDF supports subtitles. Then you just add the URL to the LinkGrabber and get a list like this, where you can right-click and download just the subs. The XML files are subtitles which are then automatically converted to .srt when you download them.

I could get it with youtube-dl:

youtube-dl --write-sub --skip-download "https://www.ardmediathek.de/ard/video/tatort/borowski-und-das-meer/das-erste/Y3JpZDovL2Rhc2Vyc3RlL3RhdG9ydC8xOTAyMzk5OTA0/"

but it was in a strange xml format I could not convert easily to a more standard format.

I felt like doing DaveAgain a favour, so I converted it to the SRT subtitle format using a bunch of replace commands:

Borowski und das Meer

The file's contents can be copy-pasted into a text file. Then change the file extension from .txt to .srt (on Windows you may need to reveal file extensions, see these instructions for current Windows 10), and various video players such as VLC will be able to load it just fine.

Same thing, but with colour tags indicated at the beginning of every subtitle line, in case someone wants to retain them by putting them back in an appropriate format (e.g. Substation Alpha or the like, I can't bother with that at the moment):

Also, the 2nd video, Die Rückkehr:

Note: these files will expire within about 30 days. Enjoy.
