Audio timestamps for Listening/Reading method

Postby Aphotesis » Sat Sep 19, 2020 1:17 am

I want to try the Listening/Reading method for learning french. I've been able to create a parallel text for "The Little Prince" and I also have the audiobook. However, after I use Aeneas to get the timestamps for each sentence, is there any way to import those timestamps into a video player like VLC, so that I can easily move through the audio?

Convert it into an SRT file (subtitles) and VLC can display them.

Although I don't believe any of that is a requirement of the LR method.

Sorry, I might've made myself misunderstood, but I don't want the actual subtitles. I just need the timestamps so that I can alternate between sentences easily. After I do the second step of L/R (listening to L2 while reading L2), I need to go back to the beginning of the sentence for step 3 (listening to L2 while reading L1). Of course you can set increments of 5 seconds for the "backwards" and "forwards" options, but I'd rather have hotkeys for "previous sentence" and "next sentence".

I think understood you. The way to get VLC to display a certain sentence at a certain time is to give it a subtitle file. A subtitle file (SRT) looks like this inside:

Code: Select all

1
00:00:56,000 --> 00:00:58,571
AVENGERS ;
L’ÉQUIPE DES SUPER HÉROS !

2
00:00:59,640 --> 00:01:00,766
ENREGISTREMENT

So use the timestamps you have, put the sentence under and create yourself a srt file. Then you can load the audio book, and the srt file in VLC and it will show you the sentences at the correct timestamp as you listen. You can also have a second SRT file so you can switch between them. Also you don't appear to be doing the traditional LR.

Thank you for your help! So, in the L/R method, you read and/or listen in whole, not sentence by sentence?

Yes, the idea is to get as much of the language into your brain as possible. So you're supposed to be doing reading and listening for hours and hours. You might be interested in one of the posts by one of our members, Yuurei who did this for Italian. Her method was pretty good, and it might help you to read her experiment with LR.

I'm reading books through LWT and listening to audiobooks downloaded or with Audible app. I don't listen to each sentence separately.

LingoPlayer gives you a forward-backward functionality and a good stop function.
You can try the following:

Download video and audio from here

Download an srt-file (machine translated) plus translation here:
https://subtitlestranslator.com/

Play all with LingoPlayer

or use "Language Learning with Youtube" a Chrome or Vivaldi extension with the online URL
