1. (If not closely related to a language I know) Find a tutorial online or a coursebook, and read through it, without doing exercises, only to the point where it is possible to decipher a simple text with the help of a dictionary.
2. Decipher simple texts with the help of a dictionary, referring back to the course materials when I encounter frequent essential grammar that I can't figure out.
3. Work through a lot of short articles and transcribed conversations on Learning With Texts, both listening and reading along.
4. Listen to podcasts and read novels.
5. (optional, if I want to maintain active fluency) Find local groups of speakers to meet with and talk to.
6. (optional, if I don't do much speaking) Write little journal entries, just to convince myself I can produce the language if I really had to.
