Where to talk to French people online?

Postby bedtime » Mon Dec 09, 2019 5:10 pm

I'd like to chat online with a group of people, either by instant chat or on a forum. I should say that I'm not comfortable with one-on-one chat or planned chat; I like to talk only when I feel like it.

Is there a forum or chat service with French people that anyone could recommend? They don't have to know English.

Note that I don't have Facebook or anything involving a Microsoft or Google account.

Discord servers. Reddit.

Most places don’t require Microsoft or Google accounts to sign up.

https://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/ - tons of resources and links to discords (search "French" in the search bar)

Thank you both. For now I'm trying discord, and it seems to be a decent fit. I might use Reddit for difficult questions that take a while to answer.

Aren't there on Discord only chats for gamers?

Not at all! They can be used for anything. I'm a helper on a Swedish learning discord and I get help on a French learning discord. Both have a great community and they are very friendly. I can highly recommend joining one!

The platform started out gamer-specific, but gradually became a place where all are welcome to make their own server about anything—including languages and practicing them.

Agreed, discord seems to be a great place to practice French, so far. It has been very friendly, but you do get childish people on the chat now and then—they'll post memes and other useless garbage. Most, however, are mature.

I find that you won't always get a reply right away. In such cases, I'll leave a message and start studying. If someone replies with your name it will beep to let you know.

I just tried out Discord. It was pretty easy to sign up, but takes some work to get familiar with the interface and find channels that you may enjoy.

The list that I saw on one web site had many language partners. Most of them were interested in Japanese, either teaching or learning. Several others for Chinese and Korean and Russian. I am sure that there are other lists out there.

Here is the one that I found.

If anyone has a good web page of language partners, please do share it.

Here is another site that has language partners.

PLEASE NOTE: I DO NOT KNOW THESE PEOPLE. I CANNOT VOUCH FOR ANY OF THEM. PLEASE BE CAREFUL THERE ARE CRAZY PEOPLE OUT THERE IN THE WORLD. USE CAUTION.
