While this is true, a couple things.
1) There was a big experiment done in China that showed a lot of students were able to progress in reading Chinese characters faster by reading with pinyin above them. I personally don't really like that method; I feel it's sort of like having the question and answer on the same side of a flashcard. But:
2) There are free software programs like LT (hosted - I am the owner), and LWT (desk top) and paid programs like LingQ(hosted) and Readlang (hosted) where you can mouse-over kanji to get a quick definition on demand only, color code known/unknown/learning words, export word lists to flashcard programs, etc.
(There’s also Rikaichan for Chrome - I swear by it )
