Request: Language Tags

If this forum is going to have a few language learner functions like Tandem search or Search by language then getting language tags in place early will be useful.

Rather than entering the "languages spoken" in free text it seems that we should be using a fixed "language tag" value. This would eventually make that searchable and useful for services to be built upon.

I would recommend a simple table structure with a label and 3 letter tag

German, deu
English, eng

etc...

related to that, there is also a "cloud tagging" function... https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=582237

This topic probably needs a little discussion and hashing out. AND GO!

I also like the idea of language tags, but I would like to add one thing. On the old forum, when you entered your languages in your profile, you also chose a category for each language: native, speaks, studies, or wish list. (If I'm remembering correctly.) I know some of us feel it's difficult to decide when to move a language over to the "speaks" category and I see that with the free-text input we have now, a lot of people are putting their CEFR level in parentheses after each language. I kind of Iike that. There was always confusion about what level you should have before claiming to speak a language. And this would reduce a little of that confusion and also give us a nice little reminder of our progress on the way. Of course, I only mean it as self-assessment, and maybe it could be optional, but I think it's better than just speaks/studies.

I've noticed one of the users has implemented [tags: #tagLangDE]. I think I'll start doing something similar.

:waves: :)

It's hella tedious if you want to "tag" all your existing log posts, or if you ever want to re-"tag" them. And watch out for character limits on substring wildcards. There's a reason mine are so terse. ;)
