Discord server
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts on having a LLORG Discord server (many of the subforums here could have their own channel) to complement the forum?

Re: Discord server
What would be the benefit? I always think it's better to keep discussion in one place.

That would be my question and thoughts as well.

Re: Discord server
It can be a place for more real-time chat, a bit more personal i guess. The non-English language forums would also be a place to practice your target languages. And sometimes if you just have a quick question you might not feel like it's worth creating its own topic. HTLAL had a Skype group a while back, it was a bit cluttered since everything was in one place, but i don't think it took away anything from the HTLAL forums. It's also easier to use Discord and similar chat programs on mobile devices since you aren't generally typing as much and it's more informal. I dunno, it was just a thought.

Re: Discord server
Yeah this sounds like a good idea. A Telegram group might be something to consider as well...

Re: Discord server
I agree it might be nice for a discord server. But we would have a problem will enough people on at the same time I think. Still it might be useful for study groups. Or even just language rooms you can log into. E.g. It might be nice to login to a French room and generally just chat.

Re: Discord server
I'd be interested as well. I can see it being a good way to practice with natives of my target languages.

Re: Discord server
I looked into Discord. You cannot host your own server. You can create channels, etc on their server, but you can't run your own.
It looks like you can host your own Mumble server. It is opensourced, and has docker instances.

EDIT:

Video conferencing.

Re: Discord server
For Discord you make your own "server" and within that server you can have different levels like admins, staff, moderators, etc. with different permissions, similar to the forum here. You can also create different sections/channels, including voice channels. It would work well in place of the 'multilingual' forum and i think would be nice for study groups as well.
EDIT: As an example, i set up this server:
