Larger avatar images?

Postby emk » Sat Jul 18, 2015 12:36 pm

Thank you for setting up an emergency forum, rdearman!

Right now, your software is constructed "90 pixels, height: 90 pixels, file size: 6.00 KiB". This is pretty tiny!

To make it work, I needed to use command-line jpeg optimization tools:

Code: Select all

# Install the tools (works on Ubuntu Linux).
sudo apt-get install imagemagick jpegoptim

# Shrink the image and optimize to fit.
convert regular-headshot-medium.jpg -resize 90x90 htlal-new-headshot.jpg
jpegoptim --size=6 --strip-all htlal-new-headshot.jpg

Is there any way to turn on automatic image resizing or bump up the maxium image size, so posters can have pretty avatars without needing to manually optimize JPEGs to make them fit?

Thank you once again for giving the community a place to congregate while we wait to see if the DNS gets restored!

Hi redearman,

Yes, emk has a valid point on this! :) Could you give a maximum norm for an avatar photo in "pixels x pixels" to allow me finding the optimal size for my photo? Now my avatar is far too small! :(

OK, I'll have a go. Although I'd prefer to just make EMK an administrator!

I've made the max size 250x300... If you need it larger let me know.

Feel free to make me an admin or a mod, if that would help you out in any way.

Oh, I'm wayyyy ahead of you! You should have an ACP login option now, which you can do administration with.

Thanks, rdearman! Now I have a nice avatar, maybe it's even too big? But I can choose the size now...

I tweaked the maximum size settings a bit—the avatars can now be 200 pixels wide (enough to fill most of the sidebar) and 160 pixels high (enough not to make post sidebars any longer than necessary once the "Languages" field in field in). rdearman's avatar is slightly larger than this, but that's OK, because it's his board. ;-)

And we can always tweak it later if we want.

All my pictures seem to be too big. Can anyone explain to me how to get them smaller, in "for extreme technical dummies"- style?

If you want, Solrid, I can PM you with my email address and you can send me the images and I'll resize them for you. :-)
