If one post can be inserted so can others, I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Dear mods: can you please put my old log onto the end of this new log? Thanks!

Ack! They got merged in the opposite order of what I was hoping for! The reason I wanted to merge them was because I wanted to insert new posts to the start. of my existing log. :(

Can it be undone and re-merged in the other direction?

No it seems to merge in date order. my test was done with two posts on same day... so it worked, but the default merge is via date. Sorry doesn't look like it is possible.

The one thing you can do is to create a new last message with a dispensable dummy text and then move the content of the edit box from the previous message to the one of the new empty message. And then the edit box content of the third-last message to the last one but one, etc. etc. all the way back to the very first message in the thread, which then remains empty - ready for new stuff. Or create a few new new messages while you are at it and move from last 'full' message to the last of the new messages.

However you will still have a problem if you have uploaded pictures and inserted them into one of the messages . Attachments seem to be tied to one specific message (contrary to links to external resources)

arthaey wrote:If you have an old link to the original pre-merge thread, will it be a 404 broken link post-merge? Or will it automatically redirect to the new merged thread?

It will 404 (sorry). And if you use the method I just mentioned then the links to existing messages go to earlier messages with the wrong content.

Bleh, if I'd known all that I would have just made an entirely new log and not merged anything. Guess it's too late now to save the old URL, but I could still delete the "new" log's posts and try again with a new new log.

I wonder if someone with database access could have faked the dates of the posts to be earlier than my first old-log post..?

I wonder if there was a programmer who could write a "insert post" expansion pack so we didn't have all this hassle... hint, hint, hint.

Well-played, sir. :)

There does seem to already be an extension to change a post's date, which would work.

That would seem to involve me changing every post in your old log one at a time?

It would still be preferable to the method suggested by me - especially if the ID number for messages is preserved in spite of the change in their order in the thread since all links then still would function.

No no, just change the dates of the ~5(?) new-log posts to pretend they happened before the oldest post of the old-log.

mmm... OK, but I'll need emk to do some kinda github magic to load the expansion thingy.
