Firstly the grammar and English of the explanation on the faq doesn't make sense

It's worded very strangely?

Second it doesn't say how to "fill" the bars?

Okay. In the 'code' box, are three different examples of progress bars, which correspond to the three progress bars below the box. Each line in the 'code' box will produce one of the three bars. They are in order. So, when it says the second and third type of bar work better, what it means is the second and third lines of code in the box:

[progress= ]2/5[/progress] Progress Bar Two:
[progress= ]8/163[/progress] Progress Bar Three:

Those will make these two progress boxes:

: 2 / 5 Progress Bar Two:
: 8 / 163 Progress Bar Three:

To fill the boxes, you simply change the first number. So, to show that you have read, for example, two books of five, you would have the numbers 2/5 between the progress tags. To show that you have read three books of five, you simply change that to 3/5. It would look like this:

which will give this result:

: 3 / 5 Books

or, like this:

They are simply preferred because they align well in a post or in a signature. No other reason. There is no maximum. The bars in my post and in the original FAQ post are simply example. You change the numbers and the names of the bars to fit your purpose. Have a look at the first post of my log, where I have four progress bars with different values in each.

Also, the progress bars only take full numbers, so no decimal point. In the example you've given, you'll have to wait until you've finished the course to update the bar. Play around with the bars in your signature, to see how they work for yourself.
