Forum server upgraded

Likewise, I am getting consistent 504's. In my case, I noticed a slow login around 1430 hours Central Standard Time and then 504's. Thinking back, the slower login did happen once or twice prior as well, but only now starting timing out. I was able to reestablish connectivity around 1500 CST, but it is still very slow.

Timeouts, timeouts, timeouts this afternoon. Are we ripe for another days-long stretch of the forum going down?

Yeah, I saw the errors briefly, too. It might have been an automatic server reboot or something?

Anyway, the forum technically runs on two servers: the web server and the database. The web server has been upgraded, and it's behaving much better. The database, however, is therefore seeing more load, because now all the traffic makes it through. And the database server may have become the new bottleneck. I do have the option of upgrading the database server, which would increase hosting costs again. Let's give it a few more days and see.

I'm pretty sure that if I upgrade the database server, too, the forum will stop doing this. Unfortunately, that will bump up the monthly cost by another good bit.

I'm going to go see if I need to ban more crawlers, too.

Yup, the problem is no longer the web server, it's the database server. The database server still uses the old CPU credits system, and we've been running low there (now that the webserver can't run low):

I have temporarily upgraded the database server to have more CPU credits. Unfortunately, Amazon RDS database servers which don't use the annoying CPU credit system at all start around US$40/month. So we're going to try the cheaper option first.

I haven't seen any 504s lately, but when I logged in yesterday, it did the old thing where it made me log in twice with a captcha.

I wish I could do more, but all of my computer knowledge is 20 years out of date.

I have gotten one notification of an Ajax error. I know nothing about computers and practically nothing about history, but my first reaction was "Did the forum foolishly challenge Odyseus for the armour of Achilles?"
