We had a temporary outage which rdearman reported to me. Apparently, the server had run out of RAM, after running for who knows how long. I rebooted it, and things seem to work.
Unfortunately, this is a time-share server, so to speak, and it can only run at full speed for a fixed amount of time before it gets throttled down to a crawl. This causes a problem if we're being overrun by an aggressive web crawler, or sometimes right after a reboot. (Hey, booting up is exhausting, I guess.) If we wait a bit, things might speed up.
I'll check back in periodically for a bit and see if it needs any further attention. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Re: Online again (sort of)
I will continue to work on the dreaded 503. It seems to be coming and going, and I'm not sure why. We can track it down, but this week is busy for me, so it may take longer than I'd like. My apologies.
I'm not seeing RAM problems again—I think that may have been a one-time thing caused by not rebooting the server regularly.

Like Jeff, I got a couple of 503s yesterday (10-17), but none so far has occurred today (10-18).
