The Intelligence community is always denying the existence of intelligence, even artificial.
But you're right. I was grouping things like "forumbots" in my notion of AI. Computer scientists make finer distinctions, such that most bots are not considered "AI". Accuracy in communication is highly appreciated on a language learning board like this.

So, spambots, gatherbots, and greedybots are not AI, right?
I also appreciate your use of the term "pretending to be humans". AIs don't have to pretend to be human. They could manage a resource, such as computrons (memory, processing, bandwidth, and disk) or money and do it in a way that doesn't necessarily mimic human behavior.
My active imagination presumes some software issues can be addressed by turning a few knobs (adjusting parameters that are okay for child and adolescent applications and later have to be tweaked when the application hits puberty or adulthood).
Sometimes you just need a bigger refrigerator or another car or more patience as the kids grow up.
