Re: Frequent 502/503 error codes
Amazon AWS had a massive number of outage reports this morning. According to a website I looked at it has been way above the baseline for being 'down' for ages. On the map it seems to be concentrated in western Europe and the west of the U.S.

Yep, true AWS outages are big news. One of the US regions went out a few weeks ago and it was a pretty big deal. Half the Internet probably runs on AWS these days, and that's a conservative estimate.
My impression is that the problems are less with AWS itself and more with how this site is using it.
With all the good will to those who're investing time and money into running the forum, issues like this will harm the community. I've certainly been visiting less recently since I know that it'll be slow or not work half the time.

They have been. That's the very problem. Very big ones like e.g. YT aren't run on AWS.

The site is nearly unusable from where I am right now. I have no expertise to offer, but could you folks use some other kind of support. Money? Monthly money?
Not for everybody, of course, but from me. I'd like to support the site any way I can.

Re: Frequent 502/503 error codes
While I appreciate the offers of money, and we might take you up on it in the future. The problem seems to be related to a change Amazon seems to have made in the load balancer system we use for the site. Or it might be this is related to the proxy server and the load balancer interfacing with each other. I spend a few hours yesterday trying to do some diagnosis, but couldn't find anything obvious. I'm hoping EMK will see something I've missed. I did a reboot of all the servers, and it seems a little better today, but that will not have solved the problem, only slightly alleviated the symptoms.

I appreciate you guys working on it.
Although the errors are indicating web issues, sometimes the database behind it can have an issue, which manifests itself as web slowness. Sometimes it helps to rebuild the indexes, as they get "stretched" from various inserts/updates/deletes.

I'll run some diagnostics on the DB. (Which will slow down the system even more, but hopefully people will bear with me)
