After some experimentation it appears that the issue is only in recent weekly/dev builds (the current one ds Version 49.0.2593.0 dev-m). Also running Windows 7, if it helps.
More specifically it seems to be entirely an issue with Chrome's default stylesheet that it applies to HTML <progress> tags.
So the solution seems to simply be... to apply any kind of CSS to them? Most browsers have really ugly default progress bars, so it's probably a good idea to do so anyways.

Yup that's it, windows 10. Edge seems to be ok. I also can get round it be using the "reply to" button, if I glimpse anything interesting peeking out from behind the big white square.

Thanks if it was the technical bods who fixed that, but maybe was google, as chrome seems to have updated itself to 49.2596.
