List of Institutions and Languages / Language Materials

Postby Speakeasy » Wed Dec 02, 2015 9:35 pm

I have a suggestion for an additional feature for the language forum: the creation of a “lookup table” that would house the names of institutions (universities and other sources) and a list of the languages that they teach along with an indicator, such as an asterisk, by language, that language materials are freely available at that institution (with perhaps a second indicator of a double asterisk to indicate that the institution offers materials for sale). The table would also include links to these cornucopias. Ideally, the table would allow sorting by the name of the language.

Allow me to say, at the outset, that I know nothing of the technical challenges involved; however, I suspect that the organisational challenge of collecting the information and updating the table, as evidenced by the following list of American universities alone, would be significant, indeed! https://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/alpha/ There would also be the matter of "level of authority" for whom could make updates to the table. Most of us are familiar with the CeLT website: http://www.iu.edu/~celtie/catalog1.html so, while interesting, I have my own doubts about this project ever getting out of the garage.

From the Merriam-Webster online dictionary...

THUD: a loud, dull sound made especially when a heavy object hits something.

Examples of THUD
1. The book hit the floor with a thud.
2. The ball Speakeasy's suggestion landed with a thud.
3. I heard a heavy thud on the roof.

I can make a DB available for anyone who wants to write the PHP to do the selections and searches etc. I can host it on the Main Page wordpress site.

@peterbeischmidt
Hmm, in my view, a private communication of support for a publicly-proposed suggestion should normally remain … well … private. Nonetheless, although you had requested that I not forward the link to the database that you have been working on, when I read the above post, I was just on the verge responding to you via Email with a suggestion that you submit database as a draft proposal for review by rdearman. Now that you have “gone public” on this, I thank you for your public support and I suggest that you send the link to him via the “Private Mail” function of this forum.
