New look and feel (and how to get the old blue and silver look back)

Postby emk » Tue Nov 10, 2015 11:12 am

In the thread Styles! Help us find some new looks to try, we've been discussing alternate visual "themes" for the forum, and the most popular choice seems to be the one called we_universal. I recently proposed making it the default theme, and nobody objected too loudly, so we're going to try it. :-)

Here's how this will work:

  1. I'm going to change the default theme to "we_universal." This will affect both existing users and new visitors to the site.
  2. If you really like the old look, you can have it back! Just go to User Control Panel > Board preferences > Edit global settings and set My board style back to prosilver. If you like light-on-black text, there's also an experimental theme called Digi that you can try, but we're accepting suggestions for better light-on-black themes.
While you're there, you can also change the default language used by the site, which is handy way to learn useful Internet vocabulary.

Please pardon the ongoing construction! And please let us know if we need to add any new navigation links to the site header, or if we can further customize the look and feel to help welcome new members and lurkers. As always, thank you for putting up with my administrative activities. :-)

OK, that was a bit messier than I hoped for. Could somebody who was using the default style before please post a message saying:

  1. Whether you can still access the site. (If not: Bad administrator! No cookie!)
  2. Whether or not you see the new style.
  3. Optional: Whether you could reset your style to prosilver.
Thank you, and my apologies if I somehow broke the site for everybody. :-( Using new features of the administrative control panel for the first time is a somewhat scary experience, because many of the options are badly labelled and have surprising results.

I just switched back to prosilver. No problems. We universal is a just a bit too harsh for me.

No problem! And thank you for confirming that I hadn't broken the site horribly. As somebody who develops software for a living, I know that changing the appearance or UI of a site is almost always disturbing for users, and I'm really glad that people can switch back to the comfortable and familiar look.

We plan to fully support prosilver in the future, and rdearman uses it, so it shouldn't suffer from long-term bit rot or anything. :-)

Also, we may make the fonts in we_universal a bit larger (and maybe better suited for text). Our survey here a few months ago suggested that the default size was just a bit too small for a large group of readers. We want to people to be comfortable reading here.

I can switch to any of the styles, no problem (IE 11).

The first couple of time that I logged in after resetting back to prosilver, the new style would come up. It has stopped doing that and now remains on prosilver.

I tried Digi, and it seems to work fine.

I got a shock, but now the world is nice and blue-and-silver again. The grey layout was downright depressing.
