I like Gary's idea. If you don't click the "Remember Me" checkbox then the forum remembers you until you close the browser. If you do click it then it remembers you forever. I'm a member of a tennis forum and I don't have to log in there ever. Well, maybe once a year, but practically never. I'm always logged in on two computers and the forum software remembers both logins. That's what I'd like to see here as well - that I don't have to relogin no matter if my browser crashes or I don't visit the forum for a month or anything else happens.
I tried using the "Save draft" button but that's not practical, I have to go to the user control panel to access the draft again. Maybe I'll install the extension, or maybe I'll continue with my current habit.

Re: I almost lost my post because of automatic log-out
CTRL+A, CTRL+C is easiest for me - I've been doing it since at least the late 1990s; web-based email, bulletin boards, forums, anything. And funnily enough, the very few times I haven't copied the text the second before posting, the browser has crashed or I've been disconnected. Somehow it feels like I'm watched by someone-/thing.

Ugh, I just lost a post due to this — on mobile, where I can't just install an extension to save things for me.

I use an app similar to Notepad (TextMate on a Mac) for composing longer posts. I'm not so afraid of losing a post as I am of posting prematurely and accidentally something garbled or incomplete.

Re: I almost lost my post because of automatic log-out
I've made a really badly named pull request to fix this.
It stores your posts as you type in localstorage on a per forum/topic basis. If you're using any modern browser it should just work. It'll work from any window/tab of the same browser, but not different browsers or devices.

Wouldn't it be easier just to make the remember me checkbox, checked by default?

It's not checked by default. Maybe that is the first thing that should be fixed.

Yes, that is what I meant, rather than writing a ton of code in order to change the behaviour of the whole forum, it might be easier to just change the default of the checkbox to be ticked.

Oh, sorry. Your comma there caused me to misunderstand the sentence. In any case, it's a good idea.
