Re: Aloyse's study log (ZH + some ARB, ARQ, KAB, EN, ES, JP)
I'd want to balance how much I think I could gain in 3 weeks in relation to the outlay. Is this the form of Arabic you've already been pursuing?

Pedantry is properly the over-rating of any kind of knowledge we pretend to.

It is indeed supposed to be the particular flavor of Dialectal Arabic that I've been accumulating resources about and randomly studying and low key giving up for the past 18 years or so, without ever going beyond a few words and sentences (so, still A0). And the course is about A1 daily life practical topics for beginners (who may or may not have some knowledge of MSA or another dialect).
I've done a little bit of thinking about what I want to do with Darja. The answer is: not much. If I ever travel to see the cousins again (increasingly unlikely) the A1 knowledge might be handy on the way there. It won't be much use with the family since they are Berber speakers, and the older ones who don't speak French also don't speak Arabic. Maybe some of the younger adults speak Arabic (MSA and/or Darja) better than French (due to linguistic policies in the past 30 years), I'm not sure...
Anyway. I've blocked out the class hours in my work calendar. I'll ask about the class status on Monday. (there's a minimum and maximum number of students).
I'm still undecided, partly because I'm feeling a bit tired, also partly because I feel that if I let this opportunity go, I might as well give up on Darja, and then it will open more questions about whether to keep "studying" my other dabbling languages: Berber, Japanese or even MSA.

Weekly log: 2022 week 18
Felt lethargic all week long.
Fell asleep sitting on my chair in the afternoons.
Tried to sleep 9 hours a night but no improvement so far.
Still no Chinese Newspaper Reading class this week.
And I skipped the Occasional Chinese Saturday activities.
Watched a few videos in Spanish.
Technical studies: 7x20', adequate.
Physical activity: 30' of an exercise video last Sunday. Nothing since then.
I need to restart logging these:
Weight
20' walking
6 flights of stairs
Reasonable eating
Water
Falling asleep
But I will not log "standing instead of sitting" due to hip pain.

Weekly log: 2022 week 19
Logging very late for no good reason.
Let me see...
Skipped the Newspaper Reading class for no good reason.
Skipped the Saturday Chinese activities for no good reason. No, that one was the week before.
Ate way too much everyday.
20' exercise.
4x20' technical studies.
I did manage to update the MSA, IT口语 and NHK tracks on my USB key. That's all.

Tsk tsk no need to be dramatic about it. I'm too busy and tired right now for a semi-intensive course, that's all. I also looked up Darja teachers on italki, there are some, if I feel like it I can take private classes at any time.
Allright so week 20:
I skipped the Newspaper Reading class. I think I'm done with this class, for this school year at least. I can't stomach the news at the moment.
Read some Reddit posts and watched some videos in Spanish.
10' exercise.
20' technical studies. (+ some learning on the job).
I tried the side plank which is supposed to be good for hip pain but my knees are warning me not to overdo it. At least my shoulders are behaving so far.

Re: Mid-year review
hmm I haven't logged my (lack of?) progress in quite a while... I'll just note the easily verifiable stuff here
Languages:
: Arabic track updates total 11/25 (Assimil lesson 17)
: Berber or Darja track updates total 5/25
: Spoken Chinese track updates total 8/25 (IT Talk chapter 10)
: Japanese (Marugoto) abandonned and replaced with
: Japanese (NHK) track updates total 8/25 (lesson 33, explanations in Chinese)
: Spanish total track updates 11/25 (El Espanol de los negocios lesson 6)
: English total track updates 9/25 (Cambridge English for Engineering track 6)
: News Chinese total track updates 4/10
Fitness/Health:
: Weight: starting 76 current 76
Bonus/Optional/One off tasks:
- buy or improvise a standing desk for home: my order didn't come through
- DO NOT take up Turkish just to be able to understand Dario Moreno's Turkish songs: SUCCESS
However I'm considering Hindi. I borrowed 3 books from the library.
I've been busy with work and not attending any language classes and not studying technical topics either (although I'm learning lots of new technical stuff just trying to do my job).
My reddit and youtube suggestions do have some Spanish content, and I sometimes read/watch it. No Chinese though.

2022 End of year review
Same as mid-year review, I'll just note the easily verifiable stuff here - can't be bothered to look up specifics.
I might do another USB key update before the end of the year in which case I'll just edit this post.
Languages:
: Arabic track updates total 14/25 (Assimil lesson 20)
: Berber or Darja track updates total 9/25
: Spoken Chinese track updates total 10/25 (IT Talk chapter 12)
: Japanese (NHK) track updates total 11/25 (lesson 36, explanations in Chinese)
: Spanish total track updates 14/25 (El Espanol de los negocios lesson 9)
: English total track updates 11/25 (Cambridge English for Engineering track 8)
: News Chinese total track updates 10/10
Fitness/Health:
: Weight: starting 78 current 76 (starting weight corrected after buying new scales) I did manage to get rid of 2kg this year
Physical activity : these past few months as I've had to do some rehab due to various ailments, from 2 to 4 times a week.
No classes lately so language learning has stagnated.
I might get a language elearning platform subscription next year (if my boss accepts to sponsor me) in which case I might get some external motivation in addition to hobbyism. The problem is that this platform has too many languages that I'm interested in. So I might dabble in Arabic/Mandarin/Spanish/English/Japanese/Italian and more...

Language and Fitness plans for 2023
Languages plans for 2023:
1/ Daily audio listening / USB key:
: 25 Arabic track updates (still the older Assimil volume 1)
: 25 Berber or Darja track updates
: 25 Spoken Chinese track updates (finish IT Talk and start another book)
: 25 Japanese track updates (finish the NHK course, then what?)
: 25 Spanish track updates (el espanol de los negocios)
: 25 English track updates (English for Engineering)
: 25 News Chinese track updates (RFI audio tracks probably)
2/ E-learning platform subscription
(mostly "passive" skills with some grammar).
Mild disappointment as the Chinese content does not include C1/C2 levels yet. And I was placed into level B2 (somewhat overestimated). I guess I'll just review/practice the earlier stuff and dabble into whatever language strikes my fancy.
The Arabic stuff looks interesting. Italian might be useful.
The platform will log my practice time apparently.
3/ Youtube / Reddit challenge
Have the algorithm propose mostly non-French, non-English videos and stories. This involves subscribing to channels or subs and avoiding clicking on French or English content.
I might look for a language class later, but at the moment I have real life matters in the way.
Fitness/Health goals for 2023:
: Weight: current 76 target 71
Physical activity :
Ideally I'd like to start some kind of sport in a club next September. But I don't know whether I'll have moved to another provincial town by then. We'll see.
Confession time: I ate a full bag of papillotes by myself in less than two days. And bought chocolate pastries this morning. Oh well.

Random updates
- still alive
- workload recently decreased (1 year after I told my boss it was too high )
- still not taking language classes
- gave up on the language elearning platform (dislike tts+no interaction with other learners)
- not really exercising beyond minimal walking and stair climbing
- weight is going up instead of down
- still doing the USB key thing at the glacial pace of 1 update per month
- feeling at a crossroads

Could you use a bicycle for transport? That way you're forced to exercise, and you save money on petrol/fares.Aloyse wrote:- not really exercising beyond minimal walking and stair climbing
