Book #40: Novecento by Alessandro Baricco. This is a short little monolog about a great pianist that lives on a ship. Vocabulary-wise it was an easy read but the writing seemed poetic and I was a little lost at the beginning though it eventually made sense to me. Not my usual genre. It was made into a movie and I plan to try to find a copy since I think in this case I would enjoy it more.

Book #41: La cucina modenese: storia e ricette by Sandro Bellei. This is one of about a dozen books by the publisher that are by territory. The first third of the book covered some history of the food of Modena including but not limited to information about balsamico, pigs/pork, cheese and Lambrusco wine. The rest of the book included classical recipes of the modenese. Each recipe included a wine pairing at the end. For most of the ragù, polenta, meat and even deserts the wine pairing was often a Lambrusco but for fish and vegetables it changed some. I especially liked the vegetable section because I'm one that likes to dress them up to encourage us to eat more of them.

Reading:
La verità dell'alligatore by Massimo Carlotto <-- 14%
Next by Alessandro Baricco <-- 3%

I'm not sure if I like the Carlotto book or not though I plan to finish it. I've purchased five short Baricco books and will try to read them all by the end of the month. In spite of being ambivalent about Novecento I like his writing.

Writing:
No writing this week though I may still get to last weeks writing challenge.

Talking/Recording:
I had one 60 minute italki session this week but no language exchanges. I'm probably going to give up on exchanges and add a second italki lesson instead. I did about 20 minutes of recording from the modenese book I just finished.

Listening:
Podcast: 167 minutes
A mix of Il posto delle parole, Cafè Bleu, Tre generazioni in cucina, Fratelli Flagelli, Un Coach in cucina (Salute & Benessere). I deleted Fahrenheit and replaced with Il posto delle parole. Fratelli Flagelli comedy episodes are short (1-3 minutes). So far it looks like they repeat themes. One example is where they make fun of Alessandro Borghese and his 4 ristoranti shows which I happened to watch on YouTube last year. Comedy can be difficult in a foreign language but I got the humor of this one though not necessarily other ones. The hostess for Un Coach in cucina lives in NYC. I'm not sure if she's Italian or Italian-American because her Italian accent is weird (at least to me) but she interviews Italians (in Italy) about health matters. The first one was a dermatologist and they talked about the sun and it's effect on heath and skin.

I'm trying to listen to a selection of podcasts most days to gain new vocabulary and go a little bit outside of my mystery/food bubble.

Film: 106 minutes
Montalbano: Una lama di luce

Grammar/Vocabulary/365 Challenge:
I've continued to do about 10 minutes a day with Decks and 25 sentences per day with Clozemaster. I did a small amount of grammar. Still haven't missed a day of at least 30 minutes. Now that we're into summer I have a busier schedule so my daily average is diminishing and probably will continue to until September.

Book #42: Next: Piccolo libro sulla globalizzazione e sul mondo che verrà by Alessandro Baricco. In the intro Baricco says he wrote four articles about globalization in the La Repubblica (Italian newspaper). The book is a compilation of the articles plus some added "bonus tracks" as he calls them. The book was written in 2002 so I'm curious as to how he feels about the subject after so much time has passed. Nothing earth shattering here but it was an OK read.

Book #43: Smith&Wesson by Alessandro Baricco. This is a strange story that takes place in 1902. We have a fisherman named Jerry Wesson, a genius named Tom Smith and Rachel Green, a young journalist. Wesson fishes for corpses, mostly from suicides, rather than fish. Tom is hiding from his debts. And Rachel wants to make a name for herself so the plan is to have her jump into the falls in a beer barrel. This won't end well. The book is in the form of a play with two acts that each consist of four scenes. In Italian it is movimenti and I am not sure if scenes is the correct translation but couldn't find anything better.

Reading:
La verità dell'alligatore by Massimo Carlotto <-- 31%
Senza Sangue by Alessandro Baricco <-- 6%

I just started Senza Sangue which is the second Italian book I read over 10 years ago so I'm curious to see if I still like it. Still plugging away with the Carlotto book.

Writing: Nope.

Talking/Recording:
I had one 60 minute italki session this week but no language exchanges or recording.

Listening:
Podcast: 374 minutes
A mix of Il posto delle parole, Cafè Bleu, Tre generazioni in cucina, Fratelli Flagelli, Un Coach in cucina and DiWineTaste. This evening I started a new experiment by doing a search within iTunes of all the podcasts I've downloaded by a key word to see if I can listen to everything on that word as a cramming exercise.

Film: 116 minutes
MHz Choice: Montalbano: Una faccenda delicata

Grammar/Vocabulary/365 Challenge:
A little bit of Decks and Clozemaster this week. No grammar study. Haven't missed a day yet.

Book #44: Senza sangue by Alessandro Baricco. This was the second Italian book I ever read and at the time I didn't have the vocabulary for it so it was a struggle. This time around it was much easier and I enjoyed the book a lot more this time around. This book is broken into two parts. The first part involves murder and the second part is revenge. More or less.

Reading:
La verità dell'alligatore by Massimo Carlotto <-- 52%
Tre volte all'alba by Alessandro Baricco <-- 16%

Now that I'm just over half way through Carlotto, I'm starting to like it well enough to consider getting the next book in the series. I have 6-7 Baricco books to complete. After that I'll be ready to return to the last Schiavone book.

Talking/Recording:
I had one 60 minute italki session this week.

Listening:
Podcast: 216 minutes
A mix of Il posto delle parole, Cafè Bleu and DiWineTaste. I am enjoying Il posto delle parole quite a bit. Partly because I find the hosts voice sexy but I like hearing the authors talk about their books. It gives me exposure to different accents and different modes of talk. Some of the authors are much easier for me to understand than others. Each interview is 15-30 minutes long and often at the end the host asks the author what they are currently reading. I recommend this podcast for serious readers.

Grammar/Vocabulary/365 Challenge:
Continue with Decks and Clozemaster. I seem to have lost interest in grammar. Haven't missed a day of the 365 challenge.

I'm starting to want to return to Latin, Sicilian, etc but probably won't restart them until next year since I still want to meet my 100 book goal by the end of this year. 100 books is a lot. Normally with English I might average 3-4 books a month.

Reading:
La verità dell'alligatore by Massimo Carlotto <-- 74%
Tre volte all'alba by Alessandro Baricco <-- 24%

Trying to get these completed by Friday because I'll have house guests all next week which will cut into my study time.

Listening:
Podcast: 210 minutes
A mix of Il posto delle parole and DiWineTaste. The earlier podcasts of il posto delle parole were interviewing authors but then in the late summer / early fall time there were a bunch of festivals (writers, poetry, etc) and evidently they interviewed people involved with the festival. I only listened to one and found it boring so deleted all the festival episodes. There are more than 400 episodes so I have plenty left.

Film: 187 minutes
YouTube: Cuore di cioccolata: birra & formaggio fatta in casa (two beer and four cheese episodes)
DVD: Rocco Schiavone: Pulizie Di Primavera (this concludes the first season)

I was confused by the title of the sixth episode as it doesn't match the books or any of the short stories that I could see and yet it was familiar to one of the books I read. Not that important. I read that there will be a season three next year which presumably will cover the last two books published thus far. I also noticed that Cuore di cioccolata has a bunch of episodes in English so it's possible someone at the beginning Italian level could match up the Italian and English versions though I don't know how much they might be.

Update: I happened upon an explanation for Pulizie Di Primavera. It's part of the book Era di maggio (which was what episode 5 was called). It probably would have been better if I had watched them closer together.

Grammar/Vocabulary/365 Challenge:
Continued with Decks and Clozemaster. I also spent a couple of hours with grammar this weekend.

Book #45: Tre volte all'alba by Alessandro Baricco. Three stories that begin in a hotel. I happened to read that the three stories were related but many years apart. I didn't pickup on that in the book but after reading about it I realized the connections. The stories are dialog heavy making it an easy read.
