Super!

Week 30

Italian and French

This time I'm going to write about the things I do to improve and enlarge my vocabulary. This concerns both Italian and French.

Last week I wrote:

Ci sono 6000 parole.

Update: finished the first chapter ("Lexique"), p. 216/311

The first reading has showed me that there are three groups of words in the book.

1. Words I know in both French and Italian (about 60%)
e.g.: la rana - la grenouille
il rospo - le crapaud
l'ape - l'abeille

I didn't underline them, so I will just skip them during my second reading.

2. Words I know in just one language (about 30%)
e.g. (unknown words are in italics): la lucertola - le lézard
la cicala - la cigale
la biscia - la couleuvre
Unknown words are underlined but I can figure out their meaning from the word in other language; in my next reading I will try to memorize new words.

3. New words in both languages (about 10%)
e.g.: il calabrone - le frelon
la salamandra - la salamandre
la proboscide - la trompe

I wasn't using dictionaries, so next time I'll have to find out their meaning and try to memorize both words. Maybe I'll highlight some more difficult words and try to revise them later.

Aargh! A textbook! You can work on your vocabulary watching L'ape Maja, Demetan il ranocchio or reading La Fontaine/Aesop:

Une Grenouille vit un Boeuf
Qui lui sembla de belle taille.
Elle, qui n'était pas grosse en tout comme un oeuf,
Envieuse, s'étend, et s'enfle, et se travaille,
Pour égaler l'animal en grosseur...

La Cigale, ayant chanté
Tout l'été,
Se trouva fort dépourvue
Quand la bise fut venue...

I probably learned all the words in the third group from L'ape Maja:

@ reineke

I would definitely love to read La Fontaine in French, it's a great idea; watching an episode of Bird Maja, bof pourquoi pas, it might spice up my learning. In fact, there are two main reasons I enjoy studying from this boring Becherelle's textbook:
First, it gives me a feeling that I'm killing two birds with one stone (or should I say 6000 French and Italian birds with just one little stone).
Second, I'm a huge fan of learning vocabulary trough extensive reading. However, I have to admit that some words I'll probably never be able to learn just from the context. At least, their precise meaning. Take for example, il calabrone. Let's say that I read this sentence: "Un calabrone volava sui fiori rosa della buganvillea, le punte delle foglie bruciate". I'll learn that it is probably some kind of insect but at some point I'll have to google the word to get its precise meaning (stršljen, hornet in English?).

Had you watched Maja, you would have heard "calabrone" "vespe" and "ape" many, many times and you would have learned many insect names. They are drawn differently and you would have figured out where "calabrone" belongs in the world of insects. "Calabrone" is translated both as "hornet" and "bumble-bee". In the US, where these things can be real pests yellow jackets are part of everyday vocabulary.

Europski stršljen (Vespa crabro) je žuto-crni kukac vrlo sličan osi, ali mnogo veći. Spada u porodicu osa. Translated as hornet/calabrone.
Bumbari (Bombinae), su kukci opnokrilci iz porodice pčela (Apidae). Translated as bumblebee and bombus/bombo in Italian.

In short, calabrone is more wasp-like. However, the flight of the bumble bee by Nikolaj Rimski-Korsakovis is translated as Il volo del calabrone in Italian ("Bumbarov let" in Croatian). In Russian Korsakov used the word "шмель" ("bumble-bee").

I will leave you with the famous quote about the flight of the bumble-bee that serves as a great metaphor about language learning and learning through "input":

"La struttura alare del bombo, in relazione al suo peso, non è adatta al volo....ma lui non lo sa, e vola lo stesso”.

This turned out to be dispelled scientifically. The flight of the bumble bee is however still based more on brute force than aerodynamic efficiency and the new scientific explanation still makes for a great metaphor.

Week 31

Italiano

Selflearning: Un giorno in Italia 2, p. 90-110.
