A language learners’ forum

I am @Skynet's first convert to this forum! After months of being accosted and threatened with social sanctions, I have acquiesced to his demands and joined LLO.

Before I go any further, let me make it abundantly clear that I have at most 1/100th of a percentage point of the enthusiasm, energy and stamina that he has and must stress that I will not be using a billion resources to refine my German.

I intend to slowly work through either TYS Further German (1994) or TYS Improve Your German (2002/3). I would appreciate advice on which of the two to use. Someone - who shall not be named - had advised me to use both at the same time, an option that is at best, unviable.

After receiving helpful advice, I have concluded that either TYS "advanced" German course is not worth the time and effort as offerings from Linguaphone and Living Language Ultimate, which are simply better.

Here is a list of courses that I will use sequentially:
a) Living Language Ultimate Advanced (20)
b) Linguaphone Advanced German (60)
c) Linguaphone German Business (60)

I did not use courses to get to my current A2 level - I took classes at the local Goethe Institute - and am quite curious to see how far my German can advance using courses.

I am willing to spend an hour a day to complete these courses and a very vague and overly optimistic self-assessment suggests that this stint will be at least 280 days (40 weeks) long. Unfortunately. the only person who can coerce me into sticking to this plan is currently indisposed.

Until then, let me start with German internet radio...

Haha, nein, The Silmarillion konnte ich auf Englisch kaum lesen.

Meistens lese ich lieber keine Übersetzungen, außer Harry Potter. Es gibt so viele ausgezeichnete Bücher auf Deutsch und Französisch, dass wann ich auf diese Sprachen lese, lese ich lieber originale Bücher. Jetzt mache ich einen Deutschkurs, und mein nächstes Ziel ist Michael Endes Die unendliche Geschichte zu lesen (vielleicht im Juni nach dem Kurs). Als Kind habe ich es auf Englisch gelesen, und ich habe nicht gewusst, dass es ein deutsches Buch war.

Genau! Das war kein einfaches Buch (und ich habe es als Teenager gelesen)! Welchen Kurs studierst du? Ich werde über Endes lesen müssen, weil ich noch nie von ihm gehört hatte. Ich möchte in der Lage sein, die Bibel auf Deutsch zu lesen - etwas, das ich immer noch tun muss, ohne mein Gehirn zu zerreißen. Lassen Sie mich Ihnen einige Fragen privat per E-Mail stellen.

Looks like a solid routine. I can vouch for LL Advanced; I didnt finish it but I learned a lot of good thematic vocab from it. I didnt know Linguaphpone German Business existed but I've been looking for something like that, thanks for the mention!

By the way, did you title your log after Valerian Germanicus Maximus?

This is evidence that peer-pressure can be very constructive. When it comes to your allegations, I will plead the 5th Amendment.
