Morning September 6 2018

Postby RachelMeier » Thu Sep 06, 2018 3:17 pm

Got absolutely nothing done yesterday evening except a couple episodes of Heavy Sweetness Ashlike Frost--too distracted by the news!

Korean

-2 pages of Nirvana in Fire
-->learned what I believe is the native Korean word for precipice, 벼랑.
-episode 11 of Thirty but Seventeen

Mandarin

-have started studying TOCFL vocabulary with the StickyStudy Hanzi app. The app has a few issues but overall I am just looking to pound through TOCFL L1 and L2 without having to think too much so I decided to get out of the Anki system.

Classical Chinese

-finished up one headlist (started it yesterday)

Nice work! I'm sure it feels like you've been grinding for a while, but it's impressive that you're working on both Mandarin and Korean (not to mention Classical Chinese!). I took Mandarin for a semester in college and loved it - I definitely want to get back to it at some point.

How have you liked Pimsleur Mandarin? I noticed that you're on Level 5 - have you seen consistent improvement going from one level to the next? How has it translated to your ability in the language?

Thanks!
Matt

Hi Matt. I'm primarily doing Pimsleur for pronunciation practice. Pronunciation in Mandarin has been a real struggle for me ever since I started dabbling a little more seriously (like 2 years ago) so I really wanted to go through everything Pimsleur had available since I really believe their courses are some of the best pronunciation trainers out there that you can do completely on your own.

I do "redo" lessons when I feel like I was confused going through them the first time, but I'm not really taking it seriously as an actual course, ie I'm not studying any of the words or sentences in it separately. There are too many useless sentences (buying and selling solar panels, talking about going to international conferences, all sorts of random useless stuff) to bother really studying with it. (I also do the somewhat cheating method of pausing and saying the sentence vs. trying to keep up with the recording, so going through one lesson can take me around 50 minutes or so haha)

Overall I think by the end it will have taken me 1 year to get through all 5 levels.

Evening September 6 2018

Postby RachelMeier » Fri Sep 07, 2018 11:04 am

Korean

-3 pages in Nirvana in Fire

Mandarin

-Pimsleur 5.14 on the way home. Oh boy, wayyyyy too much new vocab in this lesson. Might be another 3 day repeat. Starting to look like I won’t be finishing this up until the end of October.

-Episode 25 of Heavy Sweetness Ashlike Frost

Classical Chinese

- One distillation. Only able to eliminate 2 items on this list. Ugh.

-Finished up reading Ch 22 and filled up half a headlist while doing so.

This morning: Woke up too late so was reading a book on Simone Weil during breakfast so the only thing I may get to is Pimsleur on my walk.

Midday Note 9/4/18

Postby RachelMeier » Fri Sep 07, 2018 9:06 pm

Another troublesome sentence:

일부러 흘려다고는 생각하지 않더라도, 죄소한 당신의 입이 죽은 사람의 입보다 가볍다는 것을 느끼고 조금씩 조금씩 준비를 하겠지요.

Ok, this is what I have as a colloquial translation: “Even if he thinks you didn’t spill the beans on purpose, at the least he [may] feel that the dead person’s mouth was more open (lit: lighter) than yours and that in a small way [you] intentionally made preparations.”

pg 383 of volume 2, if anyone else has the book. Ugh this one is so tough!

EDIT: Ok, rereading. Now I realized I mixed up something. “Even if he thinks you didn’t spill the beans on purpose, at the least he feels that your mouth is more open (lit: lighter) than a dead man’s and gradually he’ll make preparations [to kill you].”

Evening September 7 2018

Postby RachelMeier » Sat Sep 08, 2018 3:06 am

Korean

-try as I might I could not get past 5 pages in Nirvana in Fire this evening. That’s my max for one sitting apparently, and I did not read anything this morning... blah. I really need to get my head back in the game when it comes to my Korean reading. Every time I miss a weekend it just destroys my study schedule in the subsequent days,.

-1 daily Korean conversation on naver. Skipped the transcription section because I was too lazy to go get my keyboard case...

-Episode 13 of My ID is Gangnam Beauty. Hard to believe this precious show is almost over :(

I have the wildest urge to rewatch Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo this weekend...

Mandarin

-20 minutes of Sticky Study TOCFL vocab while watching

-Episode 26 of Heavy Sweetness Ashlike Frost

Classical Chinese

-2 headlists

-1 distillation.

Morning Reading Notes 9/8/18

Postby RachelMeier » Sat Sep 08, 2018 12:33 pm

Now I’m fighting with an entire paragraph. An attempt at some colloquial translation to help figure it out:

결론적으로 그 일들은 지금 제가 꾸미는 일과는 큰 관계가 없읍니다.

In the end, those matters don’t have a lot to do with my schemes. (This is a big fat lie lol)

우연히 알았을 뿐이지요.

I only came to know of them by chance.

하지만 예왕 전하께서는 하강이 태자 때문에 당신을 도우려 한다고 걱정하십니다.

But Prince Ye is worried that Ha Kang is helping you for the sake of the crown prince.

대대로 정쟁에는 나서지 않던 형경사의 전례를 깰까봐 두려우신 거지요.

As a matter of fact, he’s afraid that the generations-long tradition of the secret police not participating in the battle [for the throne] will be broken.

그레서 이렇게 물으러 올 수밖에 없읍니다.

And so he had no choice but to come here like this to ask [you about it].

녕국후 나리, 이중심의 일에 관해 알려주십시오.

Lord Nyeonggukhu, please tell me about these two matters.

Hmm, ok, I think I’ve figured it out...

Postby RachelMeier » Sat Sep 08, 2018 2:46 pm

Korean

-2 pages Nirvana in Fire. Hopefully the difficulty of this section is atypical, otherwise I may be screwed for the rest of this book and say goodbye to my still faint dream of finishing volume 3 this year.

-one Daily Korean Conversation. These are such good speaking and transcription practice, I really need to try to do the new one every day.

Mandarin

-20 minutes of Sticky Study Hanzi TOCFL 1

-while finishing up Episode 18 of Yanxi Palace

Oh, I haven’t done any Classical Chinese yet this morning... woops...
