So having finished all of my Afrikaans books, I must say that my book from 1950 is far and away the best. Yes, the vocabulary is ancient, however, the grammar explanations are simple and the book provides plenty of examples. Honestly, I am glad to be finishing up the grammar books and moving into a more active learning stage. I am striking a good balance between podcasts, tv shows, and reading, but I need to speak more throughout the week. I am, at most, only speaking for about 1-2 hours. Imagine the progress if I could do an hour a day!

This week I have been trying to keep up with my daily conversations in English and recognize which words I say all the time. Here are a few that I can add to my Afrikaans. I love low hanging fruit!

Ongelooflik - incredible
Verskriklik - terrible
Verbasend - amazing
Aaglik - awful
Fanstasties - fantastic
Befokte - Totally fucked / crazy

Still need to learn the overall strength of the various curse words :D

A key point when learning a new language is setting goals and sticking to those goals. What level of fluency do you wish to obtain? Do you want to be able to read technical articles, books, or just get around in the country?

This is important, especially in Afrikaans, because it shapes many things that I study. There are so many words and grammar points that I am skipping over because I want to be able to speak the language - the written form is quite different.

Uiteindelik! Ek het 'n verbasende Afrikaanse grammitkaboek gevind. "Die Afrikaans Handbook"

Ek het 'n vrag vir die Afrikaansesprekenders. Kan jy vir my verduidelik "nog nie" en "nog nooit"? Ek kan nie 'n korrek definisie kry.

Ek het dit nog nooit gedoen nie - I've never done it
Ek het dit nog nie gedoen nie - I haven't done it yet

Correction:
Ek het 'n vraag vir die Afrikaansprekendes

Ah ok, daai maak sin.

Dis die rede hoekom ek dit nog nie gedoen het nie = That's the reason why I haven't done it yet.

Ahhh, I feel like I am falling into the intermediate learner's plateau. I know a ton of vocab and can hold basic conversations but now that I have finished all of my books, I'm not really where to turn next. Advice?

Vandag het ek besluit dat ek die linguaphone kursus gaan gebruik. Ek het besef dat structured kursus beter vir my is. Volgende jaar doen ek hierdie dinge:

1. Lees Harry Potter en die orde van die Feniks
2. Voltooi die Linguaphone kursus
3. Kyk meer Afrikaans shows
4. Luister na my Afrikaanse podcasts
5. 2 lesse elke week op italki

Asof ek meer vir my ego nodig het, het my swaer vir my gesê dat ek Afrikaans beter as meeste souties praat. Maar hy het nie n naam vir AmerikanAkfrikaansprekenders nie.

Since you said you've mostly focused on speaking, here's my recommendation: Read! Read a lot! Read varied sources! This will improve your vocabulary even more, and give you a better handle on grammatical forms and idiomatic expressions. These grammar points will help you fine-tune your speaking abilities, I think. :)
