Spending a few days making a ton of new vocab cards as well as revisiting some old topics. I thought I was pretty good with question words, but I am having trouble with the combinations:

Waarna, waarop, waarin, waarheen, waarvan, waarmee, waarom

If I read them I know what they mean. I am having trouble using them on my own.

Vandag is ek baie gelukkig. Daar is 'n nuwe student by my universeit en hy kom van Suid-Afrika af. Ek is opgewonde want sy vrou is 'n Afrikaanse onderwyseres vir kinders in die Vrystaad! Ek het net twee weke maar ek kan bereik baie dings.

Great job on the word order in the first and second sentences!

The final sentence just has a tiny error.

Ek het net twee weke maar ek kan baie dinge bereik.

Just word order and the plural of ding which is dinge. I honestly do not know the rules we have for when the plural takes an -e or an -s  But it should be in the grammar reference that I mentioned last time.

I hope you get the opportunity to practice your Afrikaans with them. Good luck!

Hierdie week werk ek met voorsetsels. Partykeer is hulle ingewikkeld maar ek vertstaan die verskil tussen die woorde in Afrikaans en Engels.

Deelneem aan --> neem deel aan --> Hy neem deel aan die gesprek
Voorstel aan --> Hy het my aan sy ma voorgestel.

This week I am working on prepositions. Sometimes they are confusing but I understand the difference between the Afrikaans and English words.

Vandeesweek is ek baie besig met huiswerk vir my klasse. Dit is die laaste week van skool derhalwe ek vir my eksamens moet studeer. In elk geval, het ek lekker nuus! Ek het 1,000 volwasse woorde by anki geleer. Ongelukkig het ek 1,000+ meer woorde nodig sodat ek Harry Potter en die Orde van die Feniks kan lees. :D

This week I am pretty busy with homework for school. It is the last week of classes so I have to study for my final exams. In any case, I have some good news! I now have learned 1,000 mature anki words. Unfortunately, I need to learn 1,000+ more words so that I can read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. :D

Sorry everyone but I am taking a short hiatus from this post. I am traveling through Norway and will have intermittent service. I am bringing my book and some extra flash cards so I should have a good post when I get back!

I am also thinking about setting up a permanent blog. It seems there is not much out there regarding learning Afrikaans and it would probably be useful for someone else.

Totsiens

Ek is terug en ook klaar met Colloquial Afrikaans. Ek dink dat ek die grammatika verstaan so nou ek moet meer woorde leer. Ook het ek 'n paar nuwe kinderboeke gekoop.

Where to go from here?

I have 1,000 words down solid and I'm putting that anki deck to rest. I started a new list that is simple sentences as well as vocabulary that I am picking up in songs, books, etc. I am making cloze cards and some fill in the blanks.

I am now entering what I believe is phase 2 of language learning. I can understand basic sentences, pick up a few things from TV, read simple novels and not be too clueless - however, I can't speak without really fumbling over my words.

Also - outside of occasional review, I am done with grammar exercises. Here are some examples of my flash cards:

Ons motor is al dertien jaar oud, maar loop {darem} nog goed
Jy moet {oppas} - die strate is baie besig
Kan jy {op} Zindi {vertrou} om 'n geheim te bewaar?
Jy's baie selfsugtig - jy {dink} net {aan} jouself!

These words drive me absolutely insane: net, nog, darem, maar, mos, sommer, toe

My brain does not want to process these correctly

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

The journey to learning enough vocabulary to read books is a long one. While reading Harry Potter, I can follow along with the general story, but there are at least 50+ words per page that I have never seen.
