Now on the third tome of Les Rois Maudits and it's teaching me a lot about medieval France. I knew nothing about the house of Capet going into this, so.. and it's nice to read more French.

I have some time for more than a few lines, so here's a multilingual entry:

my talk at the Polyglot Gathering

This is my talk from the Polyglot Gathering, which you can now watch in its 44-minute glory. I sound a little dorky when I laugh at my own jokes, but there we go.

This presentation is mostly in English, partly in Spanish, and there's a few lines in other languages. (Yes, there are hiccups and warts and all. I wish I could edit my grammar mistakes out, but you can see how well I do with all the languages in general).

Don't worry if you don't understand something the first time round - I speak very slowly.

Thanks.

I've finished Svinalängorna and have now moved on to Vasily Aksyonov's Поколение зимы. Haven't got very far and it's a reasonably sized book so it will probably take me a while to turtle through it.

6 useful pieces of advice concerning the Spanish constitution

This is heavily political content, so I'd rather any discussion take place on the blog. My goal with posting this is to show the type of antics I get up to in preparing for the DELE C2 exam.

In my input quest I have stumbled on a Soviet series I am watching in its entirety called It's a spy series, and its lead character, Stierlitz, has become a byword in Russia and the butt of a million jokes. Here's just a few samples of Stirlitz jokes:

I have moved on from Stierlitz' adventures and have returned to Aksyonov and his description of the Soviet era of Russia, but my reading is going quite slow lately (my energy levels are really, really low). I don't really have much energy at all to do much studying right now and I'm trying to kill the time until January (for those not in the know, I start HRT then). Honestly it's a miracle I've done so much at all this year.

I am slowly turtling onwards with Aksyonov's book. This tome is quite large and it concerns the life of a fairly well-off family during early Soviet times (think the interbellum, right after the death of Frunze, with the political tensions between the Stalinists and Trotskyists.) It also details the differing political opinions that some of these family members and how they interlock. The real victory isn't my insight into the early communist period, though, but rather the victory of my Russian after all these years. I'm finding it easier and easier to read Russian and my puzzle logic (helping to deduce what goes where in those interminable Russian sentences) is carrying me through much quicker than I'd ever imagine.

Not that my Russian is perfect, mind... but that's something I could happily settle for.

Besides that, I am reading Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World, but that book is in English. Although it's a really interesting book (on skepticism and why pseudoscience is silly), I'll talk about it in detail somewhere else. Much of what I have to say on that topic concerns religion, spirituality and belief and that belongs in another corner of the internet (usually my blog). That said, I'd recommend the book to everyone out there who is only the slight bit interested in the scientific method and how we make decisions.
