Re: Three-Horned Bull from the Netherworld - Tarvos' Log

I'm still stuck in Asian mode. I finished all the kana; from now on, you can write to me in kana too, next to Cyrillic, Hebrew, Latin, and Hangeul script as well as in Chinese characters. Now I'm moving on to more vocab and grammar in Japanese, which should really be the next thing to cover - originally Japonic words and the grammar (loanwords are common and easy, and Sino-Japanese words are easier for me to decipher, as long as I know how to pronounce them).

I am also continuing with my Taiwanese drama, which is funny, but I also quite like their soft Taiwanese accent, which is a little less disturbing than the thick Beijing one, where erhuayin dominates. Of course I speak with erhuayin...

Also, a habit I now have is looking up the names of food items in Japanese. Often it's the same, just written in katakana because it's a loan, but here and there it isn't. I'm not quite at the level of Japanese recipes yet, though.

If you're wondering why that is; I have a habit of cooking rather than microwaving or eating out. This is partially because I am a vegetarian and not all places cater to vegetarians very well (you know, you get bored of the same stuff over and over), partially because of health issues meaning I would rather eat healthy food and cook myself, and partly because I think cooking is relaxing and cutting up vegetables is something you can do mindlessly while having music blare in the background. Oh, and often home-cooked meals are tastier and cheaper too (if you know what you are doing, but I usually know what I am doing - I was taught how to cook properly at age 12).

My Japanese teacher doesn't quite understand my dietary preferences, because I like things that are very uncommon in Japan - I am a vegetarian that loves dishes from Levantine and Indian cuisine as well as vegetarian versions of East Asian cuisine. But I really think this is much more interesting to read about, and I really want to discover Asian cuisine that is vegetarian-friendly.

I finished another graded reader in Chinese (this one at level 2), but it was easy peasy so I am moving on to bigger fish. I don't even eat fish but I will catch them anyway? Confusing metaphor, that.

Also working on Japanese, and on err. well. Not much else, really. I read a book in English and one in Dutch, but I'm sure that's not of much interest.

I've started another Russian book (called The Slynx), which is a work of post-apocalyptic fiction by Tatyana Tolstaya (related to that Tolstoy, yes), and also bought the Hunger Games in Chinese for myself to read. But not much is happening because I am busy with loads of stuff right now and not all of it is language related.

I've been busy with other stuff this week, but I did speak some German to a friend I had over, and I have been listening to TEDx talks in Spanish. Which is fine. Sometimes you need to take it easy.

Honestly, most of that stuff isn't as much studying as just me using the languages in real life.

The previous weeks have tired me out so much I had to completely cancel all work today. I did manage to buy a book called Flickan och skulden which is a Swedish book about society's opinion on rape. Seems very feminist and up my alley. Actually there is no way in hell I am going to manage 50 books this year, I am starting to think even 40 would be an achievement. (Last year's 54 was a lot).

I've managed to read a little more this week, almost one chapter of the Hunger Games in Chinese (and I don't know the original English so don't spoiler it) and also that Katarina Wennstam book (almost halfway, but it's Swedish and so is much faster).

Haven’t read the books, but the movies were fun. A treat after you finish? (Dubbed in the language of your choice?)

I hate dubbed movies usually but if they dub it in Mandarin maybe that will do

I've been a hot mess this week (ok, I admit it, every week), so most of my thoughts have been somewhere that wasn't with Japanese. Mostly with either surviving because I sleep like hell and am so tired I wake up at ungodly hours and sleep during the day, but still, despite all that, I come out looking stylish because, well, what else did you expect?

I have read some more Chinese, I keep going with Japanese, and I have been reading in German (still ongoing) and English (finished an entire book in a day, but it was a young adult novel and I am very in love with gay YA romance) so there's that. Honestly I quite like the current routine because there's not a lot of pressure on me to really perform at the moment, something that I really can't use as I don't need the constant drive in my life (it burns me out). You can't keep burning the candle at both ends.

And there's always chess to play, and if I don't do my chores and take my medicine, hell to pay. Actually that means the government, but you know...

I've been mostly suffering from depression and panic this week, so there isn't much I have done besides read a little bit (I finished Ungeduld des Herzens, but it was shit) and now on Nesser again which is great because I love crime novels and I love Nesser and I love reading them in Swedish which feels like reading them in English anyways.
