Moved, put away my things, etc. Had no time to do Shanghainese this week so my class tomorrow is bound to be a disappointment - unless my improv skills are So Good that I can improvise on the fly. And it will be difficult, as my teacher warned me we would be covering harder stuff next class - she expects me to handle more than the basics. I don't know HOW I am going to do that without revising or cramming, but hey; they don't call me Tarvos for nothing.

I finished that Nettel book. It was good, but I was expecting a romance and got a depression at the end. A little confusing. Easier to read than Tolstoy, though...

And that means we're on 28 books this year. Can we make 35? I THINK WE CAN

Shanghainese trick of the week: When in doubt, produce a Shanghainese sentence by using Mandarin grammar and replacing any unknown words with their Mandarin equivalent, trying as hard as you can to pronounce them in a vaguely Shanghainese way. Be sure to add lots of final "a" particles, replace all instances of 很 with 老. Hopefully people will somewhat understand you this way.

I haven't done much over the past few days - I've spent most of the weekend sleeping. I was clearly exhausted. I've read about half of a collection of short stories by Soviet SF author Ilya Varshavsky, which are, I have to admit, nearly all genius and extremely well-written. I got this book for free in a trade a few weeks ago from a Russian acquaintance of mine (I gave her Dutch to read). We refused to speak English to each other - we only spoke Russian and Dutch (her Dutch is very good, probably as good as my Russian, if not better). But then again, she translates Hindi for a living...

Russian is still strenuous to read quickly, but the fact remains I'm missing much fewer words per page. I am extremely happy with my progress in this language.

I haven't been able to prepare or review my Shanghainese as much as I'd like, but I'm getting the hang of saying simple things in it. As Shanghainese is mostly used orally, the spoken language is my goal, and I use Mandarin as an aid (nearly all of my explanations come through Mandarin). My teachers said I'm progressing really fast, which is good (and they're apparently equally impressed by my Mandarin, which I'm not, but okay). The funny thing is, I occasionally use Mandarin tonality where Shanghainese deviates, so one of my teacher tells me: "No, that's a Mandarin tone, shorter". Which means that my Mandarin tones are NOT AS SHIT AS I ANTICIPATED.

You should have heard me speaking Czech in the beginning. I sounded like a Russian tourist on holiday in Prague. Now I sound like a foreigner with Prague snob syndrome.

I am only five books away from my Goodreads goal (seriously, we're not even in August yet...) which is 35 books in total. Not bad, young Padawan, not bad. The best part is that I haven't had to resort to reading spare Dutch or English books to get there - the majority is all in non-native level languages. By majority I mean that I am not even sure there is a Dutch book on my list and maybe two books out of 30 are English.

There is quite a lot of Spanish, though, and there will be more. But you'd get good at Spanish if you'd read five novels a year. I'm a little bit sick of reading Spanish now, though, even though I still have two books left which adds up to about 1500 pages (!!!!). I'm still gonna switch to reading some other stuff in the meanwhile because I need some practice in my other languages.

Starting with Czech. I'm going to read a Czech thriller called Smrtící Odkaz. (I think that translates to Death Sentence).

Besides that, I wanted to poll HTLAL members on what they think my next target language should be! I've got some options and they're all languages I have SOME background in (i.e. studied long ago or once in a blue moon). These options are:

- Shanghainese
- Korean
- Hebrew
- Icelandic
- Hungarian
- Polish
- Bulgarian
- Japanese

!!!! I am leaning towards the first two.
