Un idioma perdido

Hace diez años tomé quatro cursos de griego antiguo en la universidad pero después de ausentarme de la carrera por un año, nunca regresé a estudiarlo. Ví el hilo de griego (1) en el foro multilingüe y me dí cuenta de que todavía reconozco la forma de ciertas palabras aunque no recuerdo sus sentidos. Es un sueño mio aprender el griego moderno y también retomar el griego antiguo. No sé por qué me fascina tanto el idioma griego y no el latín pero siempre ha sido así, a pesar de mi pasión inapagable por las lenguas romances modernas. Quizás sea por sus filósofos.

Profundizando mi conocimiento del castellano

Últimamente me he sentido un poco frustrado con mi español. Creo que es porque he estado pasando demasiado tiempo en Verbling, dónde los nativos suelen hablar rapidísimo y con mucha jerga que no conozco. Voy a hacer una pausa, dejar los grupos de conversación y tomar el tiempo para leer y escuchar más. Empiezo con unos cuentos de Borges (2).

Buen comienzo para un log! Te podés expresar muy bien en castellano. Cual es tu política respecto a las correcciones?

Yo también estudié griego antiguo en la universidad pero solamente por un cuatrimestre y mi nivel es de cero absoluto. Lo único que me queda es poder reconocer el alfabeto (aunque no me sale tan bien con las mayúsculas) y algunas palabras fáciles como "antropos" y los cognados mas obvios.

El problema que tenés con la comprensión auditiva es muy común. Yo soy tutor de castellano, doy clases individuales, y prácticamente todos mis alumnos lo tienen. Es falta de práctica. Te recomiendo mirar la tele. Si tenés Netflix, por ejemplo, hay varias series en castellano que acaban de añadir, como por ejemplo el clásico mejicano de los ochentas "El chapulín colorado".

Je viens de chercher la traduction du mot anglais "lecture" -- je pensais au mot "discours" mais je savais que ce n'était pas le bon mot. Et voilà que je suis tombé sur le mot "conférence," un mot que je croyais connaître depuis bien longtemps. Larousse.fr en donne la définition suivante (1) :

"Exposé fait devant un public et portant sur des sujets d'ordre littéraire, artistique, scientifique, etc."

Je croyais que le mot "conférence" n'avait qu'une définition, à savoir: "une réunion de personnes qui discutent des questions relatives à leur travail commun," ce qui correspond au sens du mot "conference" en anglais. Je me coucherai moins bête !

Today is my 100th lesson of Assimil's "Italian With Ease," so I thought I would write a little about how I am using the program.

How I use Assimil (passive wave)

I focus mostly on listening and pronunciation when I start learning a language. It's important to me both to hear the language and to "feel" how it is formed physically. So when working with Assimil, I use the written text mostly as a "support" to develop my aural comprehension and to practice my pronunciation. I almost never read it silently, instead preferring to listen to the audio while reading the text when starting out, and then later, once I comprehend the majority of the lesson pretty readily, I use the audio alone, referring to the text only when there are words or parts of sentences that escape me. I also read the text aloud once or twice to practice the pronunciation, and make sure to read the little grammar notes, too.

I do one new lesson per day, and I do reviews in a cycle of 14 days. Each day I start out doing the current lesson as described above: text plus audio, followed by audio alone. Then I work back by multiples of 14. So today, for example, I did lessons 100, 86, 72, 58, and so on. For the "old" lessons, I go straight to listening to the audio without the text, and consult the book only if I fail to comprehend some part of the audio. Also, I review each lesson only every fourteen days: that is, once I have done a lesson for the first time or reviewed it, I do not touch it again until two weeks have passed.

In order to check that I really am getting full comprehension of the audio, I will occasionally listen to one of the lessons I am reviewing that day and make a full transcription of the audio without consulting the text first. If I write almost everything correctly, with only a few spelling and accent mistakes or a small word missed here and there, and can give an English (or French) equivalent for each sentence that approximates what is in the book, I consider that I'm doing pretty well.

Bref, il s'agit de la célèbre émission "Questions pour un champion" mais grace à un peu de montage tout est chamboulé, détourné et devenu absurde. Je me suis bien marré en tout cas. :-)
