Dustin's French Log

Postby dustinmacdonald » Tue May 22, 2018 3:04 pm

Hi all, not really sure how this log thing works. After looking at a few, I see that most people describe the language they're studying, the resources they're working through, and then mark their progress. I'm also using this log to track my 2018/19 Super Challenge.

Current Level: ~A2

I'd estimate myself at roughly A2. I have a large passive vocabulary and decent (~1500 words) active vocabulary but my command of grammar is not great.

Current Tools:

Duolingo French Course [100%]
Transparent Language Course [27%]
Memrise French 1: [100%]
Memrise French 2: [100%]
Memrise French 3: [16%]
Memrise French 4: [0%]
Memrise French 5: [0%]
Memrise French 6: [0%]
Memrise French 7: [0%]

Super Challenge:

2 Movies:

The African Doctor (French audio, French subtitles)
Seul Sur Mars (French dub, French subtitles)
3 x
500 Hours of French Listening: : 300 / 30000
(300/30,000)

Updating my language log:

I've tried to continue my daily flashcards. Getting there! I've also watched 2 additional movies:

3. Keep Quiet (Hungarian/English audio, French subtitles)
4. The Divines (French audio, French subtitles)

I'm reading "Le Petit Prince" and "Gestapo - L'histoire cachée derrière la machine de la terreur nazie" slowly, one page a day. I'll need to dedicate significantly more time to my reading if I want to complete the Super Challenge successfully.

I'm back! It's been a few years. I've intermittently kept up with my French reading. I just took a look at a sample DELF B2 comprehension des ecrits (http://www.delfdalf.fr/_media/exemple-1 ... lics-3.pdf), and I was able to read ~98% of it, with a just few vocabulary words or constructions I didn't know. I'm now going back through the larger Duolingo and my 5000 word Anki deck.

My other skills (speaking, listening, writing) are atrocious. Once I get through Duolingo and the 5000 word Anki deck, I'll be putting reading on the back burner while I develop other basic skills. I'm thinking I may use the DLI French course for this.

It hasn't been a full week yet, but I've continued to work on my Anki French flashcards, Duolingo Tree (I got my Owl in 2018 using the old 74 skill tree but who knows how long it is today), and listening.

In particular, because my reading is pretty good but my comprehension is terrible I've decided to track my progress to 500 hours of French listening - thanks to my other post https://forum.language-learners.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=18078 where user Lawyer&Mom noted that 500 hours is a good goal.

Length is approximate.

Not included: French music or radio on in the background, shows that I watched 10 or 15 minutes of that I haven't finished (they'll be recorded on the day I finish, so if I watch an hour-long show in two 30 minute parts on Wednesday and Thursday I'll list the full hour on Thursday.)

Mon:
Au service de la France: S1E10 (25 minutes, avec sous-titres)
French in Action, Ep 3 (30 minutes, sans sous-titres)

Tue:
Au service de la France: S1E11 (25 minutes, avec sous-titres)
French in Action Ep 4 (30 minutes, sans sous-titres)

Wed:
InnerFrench, Ep 1 (30 minutes, sans sous-titres)

Thu:
Le journal international - L'actualité internationale du jeudi 19 mai 2022 (20 minutes, sans sous-titres)
French in Action Ep 5 (30 minutes, sans sous-titres)

Total so far: 190 minutes (29,810 remaining)

2 weeks since the last update, oups!

Fri May 20:
Le journal international - L'actualité internationale du vendredi 20 mai 2022 - TV5MONDE (20 min, sans sous-titres)
French in Action, Episode 6 (30 minutes, sans sous-titres)InnerFrench, Episode 2 (30 minutes, sans sous-titres)

Sat May 21:
French in Action, Episode 7 (30 minutes, sans sous-titres)

Sun May 22 - Fri Jun 3:
Rien!

Total so far: 300 minutes (29,700 remaining)

Rather busy with work and a new exercise routine. I also need to get my Anki cards back in order, I've got 500 reviews waiting for me (not a lot for most people but a fair amount for me.) I think once my running gets back into the 3 mile range I'll start listening to InnerFrench podcasts.
