Just remembered I have a birthday coming up. Texted the link to my husband. This will delay receipt by a bit, but certainly makes it easier to justify the expense!

With French I just did one active wave. I listened to each lesson as many times as it took to “get” it. I’m pretty sure Russian will be slower, but I don’t know that I’ll change my overall approach. I’d rather jump into native materials than spend too much time “activating” Assimil.

How can you get assismil in the FLC? Did you get it from the library?

People are free to learn a language anyway they want to do so, but the FLC is about showing what can be done for free, legally. Even as a gift from your husband, that breaks the spirit of the FLC. If you want to learn Russian anyway, go ahead and use Assimil but that ends the FLC for you.

Of course! Absolutely! Hence my ambivalence. Like I said, FLC was a great excuse to sample a new language without guilt, but I’m willing to dump the FLC for my beloved Assimil. I’ll change my headline just as soon as I figure out how...

After a year of near daily listening to RFI’s Journal en Français Facile, it suddenly hits me: the newscasters are speaking really slowly. (Something I failed to notice for the first 300+ episodes.) I am flummoxed. This podcast has become a fixture in my daily routine. It exactly fills the time between when I drop off the kids at school and when I reach my office. I’d be lost without it! Except it’s time to up my game. Gulp.

I love your how you just jump in with a language and drink from the fire hose as you stated. I'm more and more leaning this way myself as I reflect on how children learn a language.
You have me very convinced about clozemaster. I will have to try - right now kwiziq is my jam. I adore kwiziq.

I’ve done the traditional textbook and desk work method. I actually have a degree in German. The traditional method works! It’s just not the only method that works, and I just don’t have the patience for it anymore. One strength of the traditional method is that you develop all four skills very evenly. Well, I don’t really want even skills anymore. Given the magical wonders of streaming media, what I really want is amazing listening skills. Right now. Not after I spend two years learning all the grammar. The other skills are cool too, but I’m willing to let them trail behind. They will develop in time. Meanwhile, I’ll be watching TV.

Assimil Russian is here!!!

I was able to breeze through the first fifteen lessons. Some new nouns, but nothing difficult. I don’t mind review.

But the recording is so painfully slow... delightfully clear, lovely voices but so freaking slow. So much padded silence between words. Clozemaster robot voice has spoiled me.

I assume they will pick up the pace soon. I hope. Please.
