Fun update. My daughters Czech friend translated all my "FLR" <<== Moses McCormick sentences into written Czech for me, and had her mother record them for me! I'm just waiting on the MP3 file to get emailed to me so I can chop up the auto and create some Anki Cards and also I'm planning on creating a playlist for my phone a sort of Pimsluer type recording which I can listen too while commuting when I can't use any other resources. I can also use this for background listening. I'm really very chuffed and to be honest it didn't take much effort to find someone willing to help me (for free) with Czech. They were happy someone wants to learn their language.

I've had the same type of response on twitter from people who know Setswana who are willing to help me to translate some of the sentences and things. At this point I'm thinking Free Legal Challenge isn't that difficult as far as finding things and people to help.

Thought I would do a quick update of this log. I've turned in all the books I got on Czech back to the library. I didn't like them. However, I've had Complete Czech signed out. It looks better than the others mainly because I plan to just read through it and send it back. I've gotten my friends recording of my FLR sentences in Czech and I need to break them up and turn them into Anki cards. I'm also going to just listen to it on repeat.

Setswana is more difficult. I'm still using the course, but I am not dedicating enough time to it. Twitter is still useful however and I'm now following a Botswana radio station which sometimes gives little news snippets in Setswana. So I try and decode those messages and make sense of them. I don't know enough words so I sometimes get confused with proper nouns or names. Still it is fun to try and puzzle it out rather than having everything spoon fed too you.

Funny how this works. Making your own connections through your own effort makes it more fun and, for me, helps it stick much better. Someone or something can tell me a hundred times about something but if I can figure it out on my own, I can remember it better. That's one of the points I wanted to show people with the FLC.

Czech:
Not a great deal to report, I've been reading Complete Czech on my commute, and doing the Transparent Language online course from the library, but because of the time change to British Summer Time I've put away the books and slept most mornings. However! I did get a copy of the FLR sentences in Czech which my daughters friend recorded. [[ I put a sample of these so-called FLR sentences in the next post which I've taken from Moses McCormick's posts on the old HTLAL site ]]

I took her recording and broke it into sentences, and created an Anki deck with the audio, Czech translation & English sentence. Then, I took all the sentences and recorded myself Pimsleur style saying things like: "Ask someone; How did you learn Czech?" and other phrases from the FLR sentences. This turned out OK, but actually needs more repetition. But it is something to listen to when I don't feel like reading, or getting books or tablet out of the backpack.

Setswana:
I'm still picking out one tweet per day and trying to parse it using the dictionary and trying to figure out the sentences. The bible just doesn't interest me, but I still try to read a few paragraphs each day. I haven't looked at the teachers course I found this week, but I am doing my anki repetitions. The Oxford dictionary for Setswana I'm using for the tweets sometimes has example sentences to show the usage of the words. So I've been using the for "sentence mining" a second Setswana anki deck which is just sentences and translations. Oddly they sometimes use words in the example sentences which aren't contained in the dictionary!

Is there a reason you are using the informal singular in Czech? Just asking.

No idea. I didn't do the translation from English, my daughters friend did. :) Maybe because she is informal, and single???

Setswana:
Spent today listening to Radio 2 Botswana (Radio 1 seems to be English). I catch one word every 30 minutes or so but that is about it. Still touching the old testament on occasion. I'm hoping to get a bit more rigorous with the time slicing. Twitter is a good source for words and usage. The online dictionary I use isn't completely comprehensive, but Twitter posters don't seem to mind when I ask them what a word means.

Czech:
Finally managed to get back into the swing with my Free library course in Czech. I had to buy a new phone, and so I've switch from lugging my tablet around on the train to doing everything on the phone. The phone is faster anyway. I logged in to find that I've got over 100 stale words. *sigh*. I managed to do half of them yesterday and I'll do the remainder tonight. Still working Clozemaster, although I'm doing Multiple Guess with Czech. I'm on the fence with Czech at the moment, and I'll probably drop it or restrict myself to only 10-15 minutes per day.

It seems to take every newline from the code and stick it at the top of the table. If you remove the whitespace, it should show up normally, like so:
