I've actually ordered there before! I got my Winnie the Pooh book from there when it was on sale!

I discovered Google Play Books. Such a gem! I found this book called 보통의 존재 - Common Being and could actually understand the preview! I'm so tempted to get it now  But I will first try to finish a few other books. I do think it might be a good book to read though. Certainly easier than 82년생 김지영 and probably also easier than the story about food poisoning at school or a family owning a restaurant.

I started reading Penguin loves Mev. I'm not done with Dana in Korea but felt like trying something different. Will probably finish that one this week though.
Reading Penguin loves Mev certainly isn't that difficult. I can read a whole chapter and just find a couple of unknown words. I'm keeping a vocab list, feel free to use it. It should be public, if not then let me know.

Some things I learned while reading:

A piece of cake: 식은 죽 먹기

Grammar:

-(으)ㄹ 테니까:
Expresses a suggestion or advice in the second clause. So the second clause usually ends with forms such as -(으)세요, -(으)ㄹ래요, -(으)ㄹ까요, etc. The first clause provides the reason as to why you are giving the advice. The reason is based on an assumption or supposition.

Cannot be used with 고맙다, 미안하다, 걱정하다. First person only.

Example:
가: 요리하고 있나요? 제가 도와줄까요?

나: 농약이 아마 야채에 남아 있을 테니까 사용 전에 씻으세요.

-(으)려면:
Expresses a plan or intention in the first clause, with the required condition that needs to be met in the second clause.
Shorter form of -려고 하면.

Example:
농구를 잘하려면 점프를 잘해야 돼요.
If you want to play basketball well, you have to be able to jump high.

컴퓨터를 많이 하면 눈이 아파요.
If you spend too much time on the computer, you’ll hurt your eyes.

I've been focusing a lot on reading and increasing my vocabulary lately. I tried focusing on other skills a while ago but then felt like it became too much. I've been trying to casually do a bit more grammar by going through the TTMIK lessons. They are bite-sized enough not to take up that much time. I've also been using Hellotalk occasionally. Now I just need to fit in some listening practice! I think I'll just use TTMIK for that as well.

That's it for now. Have a nice week!

Re: Christi's Korean studies

Hi all, it's me again

Lately I don't really feel like using my laptop (not even for movies). I've been using Instagram instead. It's a bit more chill because sometimes I don't really feel like writing. But I will also continue to post here occasionally, when I want to be able to look back at things easily. Feel free to follow me :D

I've been doing some Korean studying and made a list of yearly goals, as well as making weekly goals (which I will post on Insta at the end of each week). Basically I will do at minimum one news item, one listening exercise, one (short) post on Hellotalk, one hanja chapter per week. And study vocab and grammar of course. I'll also do some reading but I don't feel like setting a goal for that.

Yearly goals:

Take Topik test
Might take it in December if I can. Part of preparing for Topik is going through news items which I'm already doing by going through Ttmik's and Wodeu app's news items. After having finished these two resources I probably start taking one mock tests.

Read 1500 pages
You guys saw the list I posted in November. I want to get through my books. I don't think I will manage to read daily, but weekly is definitely possible!

Finish TTMIK's listening resources
I need to get better at listening and they have a whole bunch of guided videos, so I should take advantage of them.

Finish TTMIK grammar resources and learn basic hanja
I've been encountering some hanja during my readings so figured I should learn a couple of them. I'm trying out Ttmik's Hanja guide. So far I seem to know all the words and root sounds I saw while browsing. But might encounter new things further on in the book.

Write more
Since Topik II contains a writing section, I should probably practise writing more often. For now I'll settle with writing short diary entries on Hellotalk or summarizing things I've read. I don't feel ready to try out Topik prompts. I need to work on other skills before I can do that.

Re: Christi's Korean studies

Soooo, it's me again.

I've been updating my Insta but not this log so figured I should.
Since last time I've noticed a slight, very slight improvement of my listening skills. Unsure if they have really improved, but I was able to catch quite a bit in the drama One spring night. Am now watching Life and cannot catch one bit (besides the super basic ''have you had lunch'' etc), but it's a medical drama so I think it's not that strange that I don't understand it.

I'm still reading my books. Plan two finish the Penguin and Dana comics this month. I really like all that useful vocab I'm getting from there. I will have read something and then a couple of days later I see a word I learned pop up somewhere else, really neat!

I'm also slowly, very slowly, prepping for Topik. I got a Topik guide book and am making my way through it and looking at all the questions that get asked. I haven't done any mock tests yet, am just focusing on the Korean explanations of the questions and the vocab and grammar that get used. I took a look at a reading analysis and found 28 new and useful words. So will focus on that first before taking the mock tests. I also ordered a book on Topik writing. I occasionally post something on Hellotalk, but that kind of writing is very different compared to the writing I should be able to do for Topik. So once it arrives (around March-ish) I will focus on the analysis and prompts that are in that book.

I'm also going through KGIU beginner to brush up on my grammar again and feel like I'm finally, finally getting the hang of counting  Once I've reviewed this book I will start on the intermediate version. I already know a lot of what is mentioned in that book, but going through it can't hurt to make sure I really know all those subtle differences and am able to use the grammar instantaneously.

That's it from me. In February I will focus on review, finishing my comics and doing more listening. Ooh, and I'm contemplating signing up for Korean class again in the hopes I'll get better at speaking, listening and writing. Unsure yet. Would probably need to attend a level below what my passive skills are.

The disparity in difficulty can be very drastic indeed, it's the same for me. i think i mentioned one or two on my 2020 366 weekly report blog, when they were worth mentioning bc they were easy.

If you happen to like one genre you can keep going and learn the more specialised vocabulary bc the words do come back, but I would say that after being bilingual/near native C2 in English for 15 years (+ full immersion) I still have to watch Grey's anatomy with subs bc of the medical vocab, so I wouldn't think this is the specialised genre you should go for first!

I usually expect the very romantic ones, or school dramas, to be a bit easier, but I've not watched enough of those without subs to have a significant sample to confirm what I'm saying :-X

The thing is I mostly watch dramas that deal with more complicated vocabulary  I recently watched Pandora (about a nuclear disaster), Designated survivor(politics), Vagabond (politics, secret service) etc etc.
I think I might have a handful of shows that are hopefully not that complicated: got Chocolate (about a hospice and food and romance?), Angry Mom (bullying at school), It's okay, that's love, Warm and cozy (woman moves to Jeju and meets chef), Tomorrow with you (romance and time-travel). Perhaps I should go through these first after finishing Life, and hope they're nice enough to watch.

Do you have any Netflix or Viki recommendations?

Well here is what I am doing right now, this week:
- I try and listen to shows until it becomes obvious I have no idea what's going on beyond the set/prescripted classic drama of how they meet etc. When it comes to it I rewind the important talk I didn't get, and immediately go back to no subs. I still missed a few bits but I've mostly managed with Angel Eyes, on Viki.
I was watching Sketch earlier this week, and I need 100% subs, I still learn a bit or more, reinforce my vocab I can catch as I listen, so it's still useful (although I never count this in my Korean 366 challenge).
So for this week, let's say I recommend Angel Eyes if you are ok with old dramas that are 100% classic script but of course good looking actors to compensate. I'm really not looking for an intellectual challenge in the story :geek: :ugeek: ah, also when the script is too much I just give up, it's not like I don't know how it's gonna end
And what I had listed in the previous weeks in my 366 posts: Lie To Me and 열두밤 12 nights. As I mention, some are so so so classic that I stop before the resolution. When one of the main characters distances him/herself from the other, is when I just have to switch off, but it's usually a good 13 episodes' worth of listening material before it happens.

I really need to check if I can get Viki to work on my smart tv (got a tv for the first time in adult life 8-) ). The Viki app is not available on that tv (unlike Netflix), so if I want to watch from my tv I'd need to log in through my tv browser, which is tedious without a keyboard or mouse....

So short update:
Have been doing more repeated using Ttmik's videos (storytime etc). It doesn't teach me any new vocab but that's okay. I just want to get better at listening and this is bite-sized enough that I can listen to it a few times.
I've also been trying to write more often. Not enough, but more than I did before. I post a short diary entry on my day on Hellotalk and then use the feedback to post a better version on my Insta.
For example: last weekend I went to a museum about a diplomat who visited the Hague in order to ask for help against the Japanese occupation. I wrote this about it (tried to embed the post but didn't manage  ). Anyways, I'm trying to do this type of short writing a bit more often. My life is not that exciting that I have enough to write about on a daily basis. I'm thinking of looking for writing prompts or something. Or just go straight to prepping for that Topik essay haha.

What else?
- have finally ordered KGIU Intermediate (yay!)
- am about to hit 4k words (finally!). Now I just need to activate all those words
- found a bunch of bilingual stories. The temptation to buy them is quite large...but I need to finish my other books first. Speaking of..
- am making headway on going through my books. Will definitely finish one of them, maybe even two if I decide to go through a thin book.
- am slowly learning hanja. Seems super useful so far.
- tried Italki. Was not a great success due to technical difficulties. Am looking for a regular Korean to Skype with. I did that before and could actually manage to have 30 minutes conversations about my life etc. Cannot do that anymore :(

Need to think about what I will do with this log. I like keeping notes on things I find, but I don't like having to get my large laptop in order to type something here..(keep getting logged off on the mobile site). If I could use my phone then I could just take notes right after having done an activity. Like I do on Instagram now :D except here I can keep more elaborate notes and use the search function.

See if you can work out mirroring on your tv with your phone (depends on brand / OS etc so you need to search answers online)7

With my previous phone, I had to buy GoogleChromecast as I couldn't mirror anymore, and with that dongle, I can send Viki to the tv. It's a bit of a pain sometimes when the ipad goes to sleep etc, but it means I can use Viki on the TV. The ipad Viki app does chromecast, as does the android app. You can use the cheapest Chromecast version for this use, no need for the expensive one.

Viki used to be on Roku but it stopped being supported in Europe now, and probably all over the world now. But you could still see in their Viki if they have other ways of broadcasting. To me though, mirroring or chromecast would be the best/cheapest.

I also invested in a 5m long audio extension so I can listen with headphones, which I find easier to focus on another language.

Mirroring didn't work. Am planning on getting a Chromecast now, but am waiting until I have more clarity on my financial situation the next few months. Since the economy is not doing very well right now...

Anyways, I've started something new!

Or well, new..this is my second attempt after having tried to read this last year. I've read 4 pages so far and the amount of new vocab seems manageable so far. Less than the first time I tried (photos are from my first attempt) Am going to try this for 15 days. Then will see if I will continue or more on to another book.

Hope everyone is safe! I am quarantined at home. Am only going out for some fresh air, groceries and to help out my mom. In the meantime I've been watching a lot of Netflix... But am also planning on doing some more studying. I'm going to watch Ponyo in Korean with a friend (virtually). I've never watched it, so hope I will understand what's going on. Or will just use Korean subtitles as an aid. I need to get back to watching comprehensible Korean content again, instead of shows like Signal on Netflix  Too bad there's no audiobook for Harry Potter!

Howdy it's me again.

I want to try using this log more often again if i don't get logged-out on my phone all the time. I'm typing this after not having had any sleep, so apologies if i don't make sense or my sentences look weird. Can't be bothered.

My learning process has been having ups and downs. At first when corona hit I learned a lot, was super disciplined, now it's the opposite and i feel like I have forgotten even the most basic of knowledge...
Dunno if that's true or just the stress influencing my brain.

Anyways, I want to try keeping weekly goals here again. See if that might help

But first the good news:
Reading HP was easier than I thought. Am taking a break now to focus on other skills/books first though.
My listening skills seem to have improved.
Have been trying to read Korean poetry(see my Instagram).

Goals for what's left of this week:
Review vocab every day
Finish writing assignments from 2 books, use a timer.
Also review grammar from 2 books
Do the last few videos of ttmik so I can finish my audio course.
Write Instagram posts in Korean.

Record my writing.

See you guys next week
